Url: http://www.unarts.org
Sound: http://airplaydirect.com/music/stephenmichaelapatow3/

This year's HRI:UNArts holiday message is "Focused on Progress by Bridging Unmet Needs to Untapped Resources in our communities." Please reach out to your family, friends, neighbors and front line service programs, define their unmet needs and be a part of solution oriented strategic planning and development of efforts that can help. Many times, just disclosure of a need can help those who have the resources, move them into action.

During this next year, the Humanitarian Resource Institute United Nations Arts Initiative, will be working to establish grassroots organizers to specifically target the scope of unmet needs in a community or region.... This means 3100 U.S. counties, 50 states and territories, 192 United Nations member countries. The arts community will be the source for intensive facilitation, communications initiatives, media events, and performances. More to come.

In contemplation of the years challenges (unarts.org/news) and the motto "Work Hard, Play Hard," I arranged 7 high energy soundtracks in an album compilation entitled "Rocked" - Xmas 2009, available to radio stations on AirPlay Direct (tracks streaming online for all in continual play format).

"Amazing Grace" Is Renewed In Soulful Holiday Rendition On Native American Flute And Flugelhorn

Url: http://www.cdbaby.com/licateroster

San Francisco, CA - December 23, 2009 - The well-known classic "Amazing Grace" experienced a holiday makeover by visionary musicians Ann Licater and Jeff Oster. The San Francisco-based musicians collaborated to create a completely new rendition of one of the world's best-known songs. Unclassifiable as either Jazz, World, Christian or New Age music exactly, the track is finding a wide audience during its Holiday 2009 release as a 99-cent digital download exclusively on CDBaby (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/licateroster ) and iTunes. (http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/ann-licater-jeff-oster/id347771432)

Licater explains, "Jeff (Oster) and I were originally inspired to create this rendition of ‘Amazing Grace' for consideration in the 2009 presidential inauguration; to us the Native American flute represented the heart of the people and the Flugelhorn really conveyed the honor and heraldry of the occasion."

The song stayed in the artists' hearts and minds all year long, seeming to beckon for a Holiday release. Although the musicians are both working on producing their next albums, they felt compelled to share the song with the world this year, rather than hold it for inclusion on future albums. Hymns and holiday music traditionally receive a boost at the holidays, and at just 99 cents on CDBaby.com, the download is priced right for sales during a recession-riddled holiday. The duo intends to employ a completely online "green marketing" approach to promoting the track, hoping fans will love it enough to pass it on to family and friends.

Jeff and Ann began their collaboration in 2007, when they noticed each other's music being reported by broadcasters worldwide. Tracks such as "Saturn Calling" (Oster's tribute to N.A.S.A.) and "Following the Call" (Licater's title track about pursuing artistic dreams) were being played back-to-back and in the same programming schedules on radio stations around the globe. When they eventually met on MySpace and discovered they both live in the San Francisco Bay Area, their real-time collaboration began.

Their curiosity prompted them to explore the question "Flugelhorn with Native American Flute…why not?" Their music styles, although divergent, have a connection of spirit through a common improvisational nature of playing. In fact, the arrangement of "Amazing Grace" emerged during improve in their initial joint concert, immediately striking them both as a meaningful musical gift.

Ever since their first meeting, they continue to perform together as guest artists at each other's concerts, such as the INAFA conference at the University of Wisconsin/Eau Claire.

Their digital release of "Amazing Grace" is being promoted to radio by KDM Promotions. Both Ann and Jeff's music is heard on NPR stations on shows like "Echoes" and "Hearts of Space," as well as on cable and internet radio stations worldwide.

About the Artists:
Ann Licater is a Native American and World Flutist. She is a former student of R. Carlos Nakai, a recording artist, featured performer at the World Flute Fest at Carnegie Hall, and a San Jose Chamber Orchestra soloist as a world flutist. She facilitates healing workshops for Kaiser Permanante Wellness Centers and holds an M.L.A. in Spirituality. Her CD "Following the Call," solo wood and clay flute music was nominated "Best Native American Album" and "Top Twelve Best Contemporary Instrumental Album" of 2007 in the NAR Lifestyle Music Awards. Ann's music is heard on NPR stations on the "Hearts of Space" syndicated show as well as on cable and radio stations world-wide. www.annlicater.com

Jeff Oster has been a Trumpet and Flugelhorn player for over 40 years. His music is described as "Miles Davis meets Enya." Jeff's albums "Released" and "True" each won "Album of the Year" by broadcasters who report their playlists to New Age Reporter in the NAR Lifestyle Music Awards. Jeff has collaborated with NASA and JPL to create music using radio transmissions of aural recordings from space. These can be heard on "Saturn Calling" from the award-winning "True" release. Oster's music is produced by Will Ackerman, GRAMMY®-winning guitarist and founder of Windham Hill Records. Jeff's music can be heard on NPR stations including "Echoes" syndicated program, as well as on cable, satellite and radio stations world-wide. www.jeffoster.com

MusicDish Presents: Classic Bollywood - Demo by ProducerLoops.com

Classic Bollywood - Demo by ProducerLoops.com on Fairtilizer!

"A peek into this exhaustive library put together by Gaurav Dayal will give you a good representation of some of the musical styles prevalent in India.

The moods on this sample cover a broad range of emotions and situations - Celebration, Romance, Sombre and a Bridal sendoff in styles across the spectrum in the Indian musical domain. Though this package is titled "Classic Bollywood", do not assume that its use is restricted. It can be used for dance clubs, wedding parties, social gatherings or any occasion which call for an ethnic taste.

Instrumentally this demo has been arranged to a nicety. The Orchestral string section involving Indian violin and viola personify what Bollywood has incorporated for a long time in its music.Throughout this demo, the Indian Flute figures prominently. The Flute generally evokes a feeling of rustiness and this is no different for the Indian Flute. An ideal instrument for most settings, the Indian Flute adds a distinct "warm" feeling. Percussive instruments such as the Tabla provide the ideal backdrop for the various rhythmic grooves that are used on this demo. Stringed instruments such as the Sitar add an element of mysticism.

The vocals, both leads and backups have been executed with a flair and a touch that can only be described as authentic Indian. The lyrics are in Punjabi, language of the state of Punjab in Northern India. This compilation by Gaurav Dayal will please any diehard Bollywood fan or Indian music aficionado."

Yuminale Releases Transitory Glow

Url: http://www.yuminale.com
Sound: http://www.yuminale.com/audio/Spheric_hifi.mp3

Lovers of modern chill, downtempo and ambient music will find this work irresistible.

Harder to categorize than many of its peers, Yuminale has been described as refreshing and unique, with a sound all its own. A few more extended and complex works - reminiscent of the great days of Album-Oriented Rock (AOR) - appear throughout this latest effort, more so than in the previous releases. Yuminale is in no rush on this album, which is perfect for people who like to put on the phones and get lost for awhile.

Yuminale's previous releases - including the self-titled Yuminale and Twilight in the Opal Atrium - have won devoted fans around the world, including one Amazon music customer who dubbed the contents of these CDs "amazing music ... highly recommended."

"I have not heard anything like this music before," said Magda Capurso. "It's just beautiful. There is an ethereal quality to the music that is so serene, yet mesmerizing and unforgettable. Each track has its own feel, and takes you on a divine journey. Great for relaxing or working. Excellent to inspire creativity. This music is simply art for the senses."

Maximilian March enthused: "The tune "Been Here Before" from Twilight in the Opal Atrium is truly wonderful. I sincerely love it. Every time it comes on our MaxMarchRadio broadcasts, I stop what I’m doing to soak it in and give it my full attention. I can literally feel it sink/sync into my soul. It begins in a very unassuming way, but by the time it reaches the signature of those mystic chords, one has no choice but to surrender to it. Put simply, the track is genius."

Transitory Glow will be available at online outlets such as iTunes, CDBaby and Amazon.

Streaming and downloads are available at www.yuminale.com/music.html and www.last.fm/music/yuminale.

Industree Music Network Inc. Launches Revolutionary Online Music Monetization Model

Url: http://www.TheIndustree.com/

Costa Mesa, CA-December 15, 2009- Industree Music Network, Inc., a new web-based company that centers around Social Music Sharing™, an innovative online music distribution and monetization platform, launches. Social Music Sharing™ combines social networking, music, and the ability for fans to share in the artists' album sales that they directly and indirectly help generate.

Social Music Sharing™ takes the most powerful component from traditional network-marketing based business models, the ability for consumers to share in the sales generated by the people they directly and indirectly invite into the network, and leaves the sign-up fees, purchase requirements, and aggressive sales tactics behind.

Industree's CVO, Brandon Beachum, says, "I strongly believe the businesses that will achieve the highest degree of success in the emerging global economy will be those that understand the powerful momentum and energy that can be generated by sharing your success with the people that help to generate it in the first place. By injecting a "share the wealth" philosophy into our unique business model at such a crucial point in time when the landscape of the music business is changing so rapidly, I believe the possibilities are absolutely endless as to where we can collectively take Industree."

Industree stands firmly by the "share the wealth" philosophy; 40-50 per cent of every album sale is shared with the fans and five per cent of every sale is donated to charity.

Industree employs an "Honor System" pricing structure, which is based on the fans' honest opinion of the music that they buy. Fans ultimately name their own price for the music that they buy, and then the person who initially invited them, as well as that person's "Roots," all share in the profits.

In addition to launching the new web-platform, Industree is releasing five artists' albums exclusively on their own label, Industree Records, including the multi-platinum selling Grammy nominee, Ryan Toby.

Industree is free for both artists and fans to join, however you must be invited by a current member in order to do so. To learn more about Industree Music Network, go to www.TheIndustree.com. To schedule an interview with Brandon Beachum, please contact 949.836.4285 or admin@theindustree.com.

About Industree Music Network, Inc. Industree Music Network, Inc., was co-founded by brothers, Brandon Beachum and Ryan Beachum, in 2008. Brandon formerly worked for the Los Angeles based indie label, Pinch Hit Records. Both brothers also spent many years in various musical projects in and around the LA area. Their first-hand experiences witnessing the fans willingness to work extremely hard to help the artists that they love ultimately helped seed the idea for Social Music Sharing™ and the launch of Industree Music Network. Jazzmando.com Review: Bethany & Rufus - 900 Miles

Url: http://jazzmando.com/new/archives/001181.shtml
Sound: http://bethanyandrufus.musicdish.net

Watch the video on YouTube: Bethany & Rufus - 900 Miles (Music Video)

We are always enchanted by artists who can take an instrument out of predictable context and create a whole new way of looking at its function. This is also significant to mandolinists who seek to push the boundaries of its capabilities, and more traditional roles.

We found some great out-of-the box thinking and musical inspiration in this video from minimalists Bethany & Rufus, in their interpretation of the folk classic, Nine Hundred Miles. Bethany Yarrow, daughter of Peter Yarrow of folk legends Peter, Paul & Mary, is joined by ground-breaking cellist Rufus Cappodicia in this enthralling performance. We've enjoyed researching their other CD discography and YouTube entries.

We haven't figured out whether to label this "Techno Cello" or "Folk Trance." Nonetheless, it's terrific.

NASHVILLE, TN (Dec 2009) - Big Dream Christian Music/Indie Extreme recording artist, Alvaro Torres debuted his newest album, Muy Personal, at #3 on the Billboard Latin Christian Sales Chart. Alvaro is thrilled with the initial success of his first spiritually inspired album because it is different from his previous works. CEO of Big Dream Christian Music, Jorge Tarajano, says, "We are blessed and fortunate for the overwhelming welcome and reception of Alvaro's music in the Christian Ministry."

The city of Miami, Florida, and Puerto Rico have shown their ongoing support for Alvaro. People from these areas have listened to Alvaro's music for years and share a strong personal bond with him. Alvaro's Muy Personal is reaching a new audience through the Christian industry, and unsurprisingly still adored by his huge fan base. The veteran musical artist has won awards and earned numerous Gold and Platinum records in the past, and hopes to achieve the same with this album.

After being involved in a tragic single car auto accident where one person died and all were badly injured, Alvaro realized the power of God. Alvaro is known for his array of love songs, and is now creating songs dedicated to the love of God.

Indie Extreme, which is based in Nashville, Tenn., represents musical acts ranging from folk legend Judy Collins to hit CCM artist Matt Brouwer. Ylotana - Dance For The Snow Queen

Url: http://www.ylotana.com

The music revolution has begun and its name is Ylotana. With a totally new and unique concept to branch from, this electro fusion band is known for its infectious grooves and ground breaking 4D entertainment hybrids.

Taking music, graphic art, animation, video and literature this multimedia group combines artistic disciplines in a way that seamlessly flows together, offering a never before seen multidimensional encounter.

With Anatoly Podkopov at the helm, it is little wonder! This savvy former businessman left behind a hugely successful company in pursuit of his musical goals, and thankfully, his gamble paid off. To date, he heads a group of talented DJ's, musicians, sound engineers, visual artists and writers who enthusiastically bring his artistic vision to life.

What is most exciting about this music/art fusion is that it not only feeds the mind, it replenishes the soul. Dance for the Snow Queen is a prime example of this enrichment, as it is one of five short storylines that embody five individual projects within Ylotana.

The underlying idea of Dance for the Snow Queen is the concept of disillusionment that can occur in adult romance. The music that accompanies the piece echoes the sentiment luring you into a dark decadent world of whirling melodies and beats.

One cannot help but get caught up in the message behind the music, indeed, the Ylotana experience could very well serve to educate as well as enthrall.

Intrigued? The pick up an Ylotana CD today. The music is exquisitely packaged in a digipack format and is also accessible via digital download through over 250 online retailers.

Visit www.ylotana.com to get a taste of what this innovative team has to offer before they begin to take the world by storm.

Bill Ortiz, Santana's Supernatural Trumpeter, Releases K-Maxx-Remixed Hip-Hop Single, Word Play Featuring Bay Area Soulstress FEMI

Url: http://www.billortiz.com/

Sound: http://audioloom.com/Public/BillOrtiz/WordPlayRemix.mp3

December 4, 2009 - San Francisco, CA - Bill Ortiz, Santana's longtime Supernatural Trumpeter, who has been receiving nothing but accolades since the July release of his debut CD, From Where I Stand, announces the release of the K-Maxx-remixed Hip-Hop single, Word Play, featuring the vocal talents of FEMI. K-Maxx, aka Ken Hopkins, is a legendary San Francisco Hip-Hop recording artist, producer, also the host of KPOO FM's wildly popular new music program "Ghetto Gumbo".

As a recording artist, K-Maxx has released several popular underground CDs during the Bay Area's 'Rap Reign' in the 90'. As producer, K-Maxx has worked with other leading Bay Area Rap and Hip-Hop artists, including Tower of Power's Lenny Williams, who recently cracked the nation's Top 30 Urban AC charts, Too $hort, Andre Nickatina, and King Tech, to name only a few.

Ortiz is quick to point out, "I've been a big fan of K-Maxx for a longtime, and I love his production skills." While K-Maxx is a gifted Hip-Hop producer, he's also a gifted multi-instrumentalist, who is as proficient on a piano, guitar, and bass as he is with a mixing desk and sampler. "K-Maxx thinks like a musician," continues Ortiz, "and he comes from classic R&B background, like I do, so we share a common music vocabulary that also includes Soul and Hip-Hop. This is what makes his production style so unique."

When Ortiz discovered that K-Maxx was playing the track Word Play from debut CD, From Where I Stand, to his "Ghetto Gumbo" audience, Ortiz states, "K-Maxx is an amazing barometer and supporter of Bay Area music and musicians and it was a complete surprise and honor to receive his recognition. It wasn't long after we got in touch and put the wheels in motion for him to produce a Hip-Hop remix of Word Play."

Word Play was remixed at San Francisco's iconic Pyramind Studios, and final mixing was a done by Steve Heithecker with Bill Ortiz and K-Maxx.

The most authoritative national music industry magazine, Music Connection, states, "Contemporary jazz trumpet greats have a run for their money now that longtime Santana sideman Ortiz enters the urban jazz scene with this chillin', artsy yet infectious, easy grooving debut." Keith Hannaleck of MuzikReviews.com gives Four Stars and states, "It comes as no surprise that his solo effort From Where I Stand turns out to be first rate material." Carlos Santana states, "Bill articulates the beautiful language of jazz without losing the purity and innocence of a child. It's a wonderful experience to share music every night with him."

To receive a review copy of From Where I Stand, or the remix single, Word Play, or to see Bill Ortiz live in February 2010, when he returns to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's Joint, contact Christopher Buttner, at chris@prthatrocks.com.

New World/Folk/Roots group The Bethany and Rufus Roots Quartet will be performing songs from their live 12 track CD "Live À Fip" on December 8th at Paris' most reputable jazz-club, the New Morning. The quartet was invited to perform live on Radio France's Live À Fip radio series following a promotional radio spot for the Les Nuits Atypique festival. The Roots Quartet includes the duo Bethany and Rufus (Bethany Yarrow and Rufus Cappadocia), along with Fulani flutist Yacouba "Denke Denke" and Afro Haitian drummer 'Bonga' Jean-Baptiste.

The Bethany & Rufus Roots Quartet's Live À Fip CD's strength lies not just in each artist's singular talents, but in their capacity to combine their abilities in a way that complements each member of the group to bring about a sound that is unique and groundbreaking, while incorporating concerns about global injustices, violence, and inequalities. Live À Fip is the product of a world where people and societies are interconnected, converging, and in turmoil.

"A diabolically funky bass is joined by the song of a fulani flute and the cadence of a voodoo drum, and the cello bows under an incantation of the ancestors... a revelation of Les Nuits Atypiques Festival of Langon and the love at first listen of studio 105 of Radio France, the folk duo Bethany & Rufus have transformed themselves into a post-modern quartet for an evening of spellbinding music." - MONDOMIX

About Bethany And Rufus Roots Quartet
Bethany as the daughter of legendary 60's Folk singer Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) draws from the many songs that her father collected as part of the seminal folk movement of the 60s. Yacouba has dug deeply into the folkloric Hausa, Djerma, Peul and Songhai traditions of Niger and Bonga is the descendant of a very rich lineage of Vodou ceremonial drumming and song. Bonga has also traveled extensively through Haiti collecting and learning the different manifestations of Haitian song and folklore. Rufus has taken the cello into previously unknown realms and is noted for his collaborations in African, Arabic, and American music forms and also has a solo CD Songs for Cello on the Daqui label. Individually all of the members of the group have been instrumental in expanding the role of traditional forms in their respective musics. It is with this background that they have come together to create a sound that although based around the song forms of American traditional music reaches back to a common root that has inspired everyone involved.

WINTER 2010 CHICAGO BLUES TOUR™ 8 Clubs 10 Bands Jan. 16

Email: mediarelations@chicagobluestour.com
Url: http://www.chicagobluestour.com
Sound: http://www.chicagobluestour.com/bluestour/mp3s/BlueCadillac_live_trio_ChainsawDupont.mp3

Blues University® and the City of Chicago invite music fans to celebrate the vitality of the blues, from Chicago and beyond, on Saturday, January 16th. Join the Chicago Blues Tour™, a "pub crawl" event, connecting 8 of Chicago's famous lounges featuring live blues as it departs from the "hub" of the tour, Lizzie McNeill's, at 400 N. McClurg Ct. Tickets ($45) include all transportation and admission charges for a nightlong blues adventure, with 12 live blues bands performing all night long. Buses depart from Lizzie's every ten to twenty minutes from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., and then begin shuttling between clubs until 2:00 a.m. Tickets are available through the Chicago Blues Tour website, www.chicagobluestour.com, or by phone via Ticketweb at 866.468.3401. A limited supply of tickets may be available at the door, but advance tickets are strongly recommended, as the tour often sells out. For further information, visit the website or call the toll-free BluesLine at 866-LIVEBLUES (866-548-3258). Maps, schedules, and an FAQ are also updated frequently at the website.

The Tour continues its tradition of featuring emerging blues artists and the dynamic evolution of blues, with "young gun" guitarists Travis Feaster, Noah Wotherspoon, and Samantha Fish, who write original songs that push the idiom in new directions, from Feaster's blues-rock twist on Southern Soul, to Wotherspoon's psychedelic-glam spin on Delta rhythms and narrative. Rising guitar stars like "Chicago Blues Challenge" finalists Chainsaw Dupont and Toronzo Cannon, as well as favorites of Chicago's soul-blues underground, Super Percy and Fantastic L-Roy, and even Chicago veterans like Killer Ray Allison and Vance Kelly, infuse their blues with inventive hybrids of jazz, rock, soul, funk, and even hip-hop elements. The Tour emphasizes off-the-beaten-path, classic lounges on Chicago's south and west side blues circuits, with audiences drawn from the neighborhood, who favor entertaining variety over purity of tradition.

The Chicago BluesTour™, now entering its 20th anniversary year, is part of a slate of "Chicago Blues Weekend" events (www.bluesweekend.com) that are anchored by Buddy Guy's legendary annual stand at Legends. The events also include weekend "Blues Shuttles" to clubs featuring West Side Soul, South Side guitarists, Blues Women, and Chicago's famed "Blues Alley" on the North Side, as well as a visit from a traveling showcase, the Kansas City Blues Caravan, at Rosa's.

Blues University® sponsors classes and events that expand the understanding and audience for blues music. The Chicago Blues Tour™, which showcases the wide variety of modern blues talent on display in Chicago, began in 1990 as the West Side Blues Tour and has expanded in scope to include live blues venues throughout Chicago, and has helped promote blues with assistance from the Mayor's Office of Special Events since 1998. Blues U.® maintains an online archive of blues information and also launched a blues news service, BluesWire, in 2008.

Give The Gift Of Music Promotion This Season With Mi2N Music PR

Url: http://www.mi2n.com/gift.php3

As part of Mi2N's continuing efforts to make its services available to more artists/musicians, the company will begin offering the purchase of its Mi2N press release distribution services in the form of gift certificates for the upcoming holiday season. The decision to do so was quite logical, partially due to Mi2N's popularity as well as the current economic climate.

"People love giving gifts to their friends and family for the holidays, but during economically challenging times, they tend to choose gifts that are more practical than fun. By giving an Mi2N PR Gift Certificate, you can do both. We offer several PR distribution packages to choose from, so you can support your favorite artist and without breaking the bank," said Eric de Fontenay, Mi2N's Founder and CEO.

Ideal for artists and labels, as well as supporting promoters and agencies, the Mi2N Music PR service provides guaranteed press release placements through a network of newswires, eGroups, blog communities, boards and forums, as well as MP3 and video distribution. In addition to guaranteed PR placement, the packages provide exposure through the Mi2N website, and multiple other sources with target based distribution. Through Mi2N's penetration in the music industry as well as its diverse and substantial delivery network, your giftee's PR announcement will be seen by prospective fans, promoters, labels - everyone who's anyone in the music industry.

"You can be the best artist/musician in the world, but if you aren't able to get news out about your music, upcoming releases, or performances to music industry professionals, it really doesn't matter. Waiting to be discovered based on talent alone is like trying to find a needle in a haystack," de Fontenay continued. "There are lots of talented artists who know that visibility and exposure are critical to their success. It's what separates them from the rest. They have a better chance at being successful, not necessarily because they are more talented, but because they know that publicity is a need, not a luxury, and they make the investments accordingly to acquire as much exposure as possible. We're proud to play a role in making that happen."

If the person you love is a talented musician, then you probably know how hard they work on making their music the best it can be. This holiday season, you can help them to tell the world about it by giving them something they'll thank you for: a seasonal gift certificate for the Mi2N Music PR marketing service.

Mi2N gift certificates will be available for purchase beginning December 1st. Get yours at http://www.Mi2N.com/gift.php3

MusicDish presents: Stephen Michael Apatow - Nessun Dorma

Not only is Stephen Michael Apatow the President, Founder, and Director of Research and Development of the Humanitarian Resource Institute, he is now able to credit himself as an accomplished recording artist. He is promoting his most recent track, "Nessun Dorma (None Shall Sleep)" - an aria from the Puccini opera, Turnadot. Apatow does a splendid job of conveying the emotions of Puccini's original composition and considering this piece is not an easy one to sing, his version is something to be heard. Apatow has certainly been blessed with a powerful tenor voice and "Nessun Dorma" is surely the beginning of an outlet through which this humanitarian will inspire his listeners.

The Seven Essentials To Writing A Press Release

By Michele Wilson-Morris
(more articles from this author)
2009-11-29

Working in the music industry has its perks, privileges, and pains as anyone who works in it knows. No matter what your genre is, one thing remains the same for all artists: You need to bring attention to yourself, your music, and your events. And while there are several ways to do so, few are as effective (in terms of cost or exposure) as a well written press release.

Writing a press release may prove to be a challenge to those whose focus is solely on their musical ability and efforts, but it doesn't have to be. There's an art to writing a good press release just like there's an art to making good music. In fact, a well written press release is simply you on paper. There are many tricks to the trade, and I'm going to share some of several of them with you: The Seven Essentials of Press Release Writing.

Essential #1: "Who, What, When, Where, and Why?"
A good press release must clearly convey who is doing what and when, where it's happening, and why. Your target audience is much more likely to be responsive if you included answers to all of the above. When I write press releases for Mi2N-PRESS, I never leave room for "guesswork." Plain and simple: If people have to guess about any information that should be included in the press release, then you haven't done your work.

Essential #2: "Less Is More"
When you're writing a press release and answering the what, where, when and why, remember that less is more. Not less information, but fewer words. Short, detailed sentences are best. Think about it. If you're running from one performance to another, meeting with your agent, writing lyrics or music, talking with your promoter AND trying to squeeze 3 square meals, family, and far too few hours of sleep into your the day as most of us are, then you know that time is precious. Your press release should take into account the fact people are a lot less likely to read a press release that's much longer than one page. As President Thomas Jefferson said, "The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do." And if neither of those reasons convinces you, just know this: media professionals (like most of us) are fundamentally lazy. They don't want to do any more research than they have to.

Essential #3: "The Early Bird Gets The Worm"
If you haven't grabbed your target audience's attention by the end of paragraph one, you've probably lost the opportunity to do so. People simply don't have time to wait for fluff. If they want more information than what you've given them in the first paragraph about that CD that you are releasing in January, 2010 in Europe (because you performed live on a famous radio show and were so well liked, the rest was history), then you've put out a good "hook" and now they've "taken the bait". Now you need to "real them in."

Essential #4: "Thou Shalt Not Lie"
One thing that writers and music professionals are able to do is to quickly spot a press release that has been, shall we say "highly exaggerated". It's just as important to be known for being credible than it is for making great music. Submitting a press release that contains false or misleading information is just as bad as lip syncing at your "live performance." If you don't believe me, just ask Milli Vanilli.

Essential #5: "Spice, Please"
Use audio and video links whenever possible. While press releases are most certainly a business document, that doesn't mean it has to be a boring document. Capture your reader's attention with a photograph or an audio URL. People like to be entertained. We like our food, cars, and homes to be aesthetically pleasing, and we like our press releases that way as well.

Essential #6: "Quotes: He Said, She Said...
One way to infuse life into your press release is to incorporate a quote. Find a good quote that is relevant to your press release and use it. Remember the favorable press you received by that infamous reviewer who has critiqued your CD or been to your concert and written about it favorably? Dig it out, and quote them. It's an endorsement of you and your music.

Essential #7: "In The Beginning..."
The title of your press release is especially important as it is the first thing one sees and the scale that will be used to measure their interest in actually reading your press release or moving on to the next one. A good title is as important as having an M.C. who can get the crowd fired up about you before you even hit the stage. It has to be both interesting and informative.

Obviously, a lot of work goes into writing a great press release. But it's definitely within your reach if you utilize the essentials outlined above. With online marketing being more important than ever before because of social networking sites, blogs, and countless other sources of music buzz, you have to put your best foot forward with your press release. It's your connection to your audience: conveying your brand, your music, and your story. It's also important to have it distributed to your target audience and as many appropriate sites as possible within the industry. Choose your distribution service carefully. Make sure that they have a reputation for being a trusted news source and a large enough dissemination to make it worth your investment.

Quite applicable to this topic, I'll leave you with this quote: "It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult." Seneca (3 BC - 65 AD)

Dirt Star Walks The Indie Path Through Shenzhen, China

Subsequent to my trip to Hong Kong last June for Music Matters, Dirt Star (a musician based out of Shenzhen in southern China) and I connected through Twitter. I quickly became interested in this Western expat who started from scratch as a one-man band, utilizing a modified acoustic guitar with built-in midi controller for rocking beats in sync with Ableton Live. Over time, he became a jack-of-all-trades, playing in a number of bands, including a stint as an electronic DJ, as guitarist and lead singer for an indie rock band, a street performer, an electronic jazz artist. He's even performed pop songs before live audiences of over 20,000. Dirt Star now performs in a 3-piece punk rock and has shared stages with some of the biggest names in alternative music, including the Dirty Three, Feeder, the Rheostatics, and China's biggest diva, Faye Wong.

Dirt Star recently released his latest project called "On The Street", a collection of nine electronic-garage-punk-rock songs. The English language album is a departure from his debut album, "The Score", which featured songs in both Mandarin and English.

So how did you end up in Shenzhen, China?

I'm originally from North America, but I'm an adventurer at heart, and love to discover new places. I passed though Shenzhen once on a music tour, and fell in love with the city's dynamic energy and melting pot.

How important is the neighboring live Hong Kong scene for a Shenzhen-based band? How about the Beijing underground scene, home to 300 indie bands?

It's kind of two separate scenes, but there are more and more crossover opportunities -- definitely excited to see more interaction between the two cities. It's great to see how many bands are coming out of Beijing these days. I've played there in the past and it's always a lot of fun.

Is there a lot of collaboration between independent bands in major Chinese cities (Shenzhen, Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai,...)?

I recently produced an album for a local singer named Liang Ying. On the album, we collaborated with a bassist in Taiwan, an accordion player from the Ukraine, and a guitarist in Beijing. We collaborated the whole time with each musician over the Internet, sharing files using Drop.io, and keeping on top of the project schedule using Google Sites. Each of us uses our own personal studio setup - either Pro Tools, Nuendo, or Ableton Live. With more and more computer savvy kids in China every day, it's really going to be an area that expands exponentially.

While your first album featured a mix of Mandarin and English songs, this latest release in primarily is English. Why the English focus? Won't this make it harder to connect with your fanbase?

Actually, I think creating in multiple languages has helped me to expand my fanbase. In the future, I plan on doing a CD with both an English and a Mandarin version of each song.

Where else have you played in Asia? What most differentiates music fans in the various Asian countries you've toured?

I've played on festival stages in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Taiwan and Hong Kong. And it may sound cliche, but it's really true - fans in each place I've played share a common bond that transcends all their differences.

We've all heard of the scourge of piracy in China? How does an indie musicians such as yourself manage to survive?

Piracy is definitely bad for CD sales. On the bright side, the new music economy that we see today has allowed for a lot of musicians to get exposure that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

I really believe that if a young musician can get their act together in China, there's a great opportunity to get paid. For example, Liang Ying currently has a 30-city tour in the works. 30 cities! The big rewards are going to be found in other growing parts of the music industry, especially in live shows, licensing, creative sponsorships and touring.

MusicDishTV: Rukas Juice - Live My Life

Michael Cornell (director) and Tracey Paleo (executive producer) team up to turn musician Kameron White's music into visual form. White is the lead singer and composer of the Los Angeles band, Rukas Juice. After hearing Rukas Juice's "Live My Life," Cornell and Paleo began to develop and create a video that would take in all the senseless chaos of the economic crisis and spit it back out with a rock-and-roll twist in this smart and witty wake-up call.

Reviews:
"Michael Cornell was inspired by the upbeat positive music and lyrics of "Live My Life" and the contrast of the financial crisis that gripped America suddenly in 2008 to create the music video."

"A security camera 'capture' of what's really going on when no one else is looking."

"Mr. Cornell was inspired by the Rukus Juice song, Live My Life, and how it actually related to the concept of American Freedom. He felt that connecting it visually to the TARP controversy would be an interesting way to explore what has transpired in our economy, government and society."

"…offers a light handed, free-spirited look at the collapse of American Capitalism, that is part "Alice in Wonderland" and part Oliver Stone's "Wall Street," in the rock and roll music video "Live My Life."
