M.C. Records is proud to announce they'll be releasing "Rise and Fall" by genre outlaw Dayna Kurtz on March 31. This marks the 2nd recording that Dayna and M.C. Records have released together. In 2013 M.C. Records issued her R&B recording, Secret Canon Vol. 2 to critical acclaim.

Rise and Fall, is Dayna's first album of originals in 4 years. Says Kurtz, "This album is the most like (debut) Postcards From Downtown in that it covers such a long span of collected original material. Rise and Fall covers these last few years of my life and they were pretty heavy years; My father died, my marriage ended. I moved to New Orleans. I had a couple years of wild oat-sowing and then found a grand new love. There’s been a lot to think about, to write about.”

With roots in New Jersey, a lengthy New York City past, and her time now divided between her family’s cabin on a river in Vermont, and a home on another river in New Orleans, she is an entirely American creature -yet her greatest successes and most regular touring have happened in in theaters and rock clubs in European cities such as Barcelona and Amsterdam.

She had a top 10 hit song in the Netherlands with the gorgeous and beguiling, "Love Gets in the Way." She has toured with Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello, Richie Havens, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dr. John, Rufus Wainright and Mavis Staples. She’s recorded a duet with Norah Jones, and both Ms. Jones and Bonnie Raitt have sung her praises in interviews. She has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, The Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival, The Celebrate Brooklyn Festival, Mountain Stage, Austin City Limits Festival and World Café.

Since its founding in 1983 by Michael Levine, the Dallas Brass has become one of America’s foremost musical ensembles. The group has established a unique blend of traditional brass instruments with a full complement of drums and percussion, which creates a performing entity of extraordinary range and musical challenges. The Dallas Brass repertoire includes classical masterpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood and patriotic music.

MICHAEL LEVINE (director, trombone) is originally from St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He first attended the University of Minnesota and then The Juilliard School, where he received his Bachelor of Music Degree. For three years he held the position of Assistant Principal Trombone in the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Michael founded the Dallas Brass in 1983, and he serves as the ensemble’s trombonist, Master of Ceremonies and Artistic Director. As an arranger, he has made significant contributions to the Dallas Brass library. Michael has invented a device called the WindMaster, to help wind players develop their breathing technique. More recently, he has created the Harmony Bridge Project which is designed to connect band and other music students with seniors in nursing homes around the country. Michael’s favorite non-musical activity is snow skiing. He has duel residency in Dallas, TX and Minneapolis, MN.

Luis Miguel Araya (Trumpet) born in Alajuela, Costa Rica, has played a wide range of musical styles, ranging from classical to popular and Latin music. He has studied music extensively both in Costa Rica and in the United States, holding a Bachelor of Music degree from the National Institute of Music (Costa Rica), a Master of Music degree from Loyola University in New Orleans and a Doctorate in Music from Arizona State University. Luis has been a member of the Costa Rica National Symphony Orchestra since 1997. He is also on the faculty of the University of Costa Rica. Other orchestral experiences include the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Symphony Orchestra, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Other festivals attended by Araya are the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute (Denver, CO), and a Solo recital at the International Trumpet Guild Conference 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.

D.J. Barraclough (Trumpet) began his musical studies on the trombone and continued playing it through high school. He didn't actually begin the trumpet until his 3rd year in college. Originally from southern Utah, D.J. attended Dixie State College in St. George. He has performed with such organizations as the Utah Symphony, the Lex De Azevedo Orchestra, and the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. When not performing, D.J. enjoys working as a brass clinician, and through the use of the Smart Music Studio software by Coda Music Technologies, he helps young students learn to make practice more effective and fun. D.J. is also an accomplished instrument repair technician. His other interests include hiking, camping, and various forms of meditation. D.J. presently lives in southern Utah with his wife, Kristine, and their six children.

Juan Berrios (horn, tenor horn, flugelhorn) is originally from Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He has a degree in horn performance from the University of Central Florida, where he was the recipient of several awards including the Presser Foundation Scholarship and the Performance Excellence Award. For three years, Juan was a member of the award-winning Brass Band of Central Florida, one of the top-ranked brass bands in the United States. Serving as the band’s solo tenor horn player, he was a featured soloist on numerous occasions and can be heard on the band's album "10th Anniversary." Juan has spent summers at some of the most prestigious music festivals in the country, including the Music Academy of the West and the Aspen Music Festival and School. Active as an educator and performer in the Central Florida area, Juan works with many middle and high schools serving as a private instructor and guest clinician, and performs with professional organizations such as the Sarasota Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, Brevard Symphony, and Palm Beach Symphony, among others.

Juan lives in Kissimmee, FL and enjoys spending time with his fiancée, cooking and bowling when not touring with the Dallas Brass.

Paul Carlson (Tuba) from Macomb, IL, has an extensive educational resume. He has degrees from the University of Illinois (B.M.), University of New Mexico (M.M.), and is presently working on his Doctorate in Tuba Performance at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. As an music educator, Paul has taught on the middle school, high school and college levels. He was a Graduate Assistant at the University of New Mexico and has served on the faculty of the Blue Lake Arts Camp in northern Michigan. Performance experience includes the New Mexico Brass Quintet, Santé Fe Symphony Brass Quintet, the national touring group —The King’s Brass, the Walt Disney Collegiate All-Star Band (Orlando), and symphony orchestras including New Mexico, Albuquerque, and Louisville. Paul is also an accomplished jazz bass player — both upright and electric — and does various jazz gigs in and around Indianapolis.

CHRIS MCWILLIAMS (drums/percussion) is originally from Philadelphia, PA. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Central Florida and is completing his Doctoral Degree in Percussion Performance as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas, where he also received his Master’s Degree in 2011. He has recently performed with the UNT Percussion Ensemble and 2:00 Steel Band at the 2009 and 2012 Percussive Arts Society International Conventions, and on 2011 and 2013 European tours, in addition to serving as principle percussionist with the UNT Wind Symphony for three years. Chris has also performed for two years as a student musician in Walt Disney World, and has won the UCF Performance Excellence Competition, as well as performed with Dame Evelyn Glennie as a member of the 2007 International Youth Wind Orchestra in Killarney, Ireland, and as a member of the Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps in 2005. In addition to his teaching duties at UNT, Chris is Percussion Co-Caption Head for The Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps, and has worked with multiple high schools in both the Orlando and Dallas/Fort Worth areas. Chris currently resides in the Dallas, TX area.

(Cedar Rapids, IA – December 9, 2014) – The New Black 7, fresh off their Fall 2014 Tour, are saving the best of 2014 for last as well as kicking off 2015 in a big way. Today, the band announces the release of their latest EP, "God Willin' And The Creek Don't Rise" (Route 3 Records/Carson Entertainment) and after a full summer of recording, the end-result comes at a time when Country Music is finding its roots. The album is truly a unique brand of country rock that is both melodically and lyrically irresistible while maintaining a high level of musicianship and soloing worthy of any classic rock album of yore. Book ended by the conceptual intro/outro of the title track, the first single "Fine Wine" melds country's flair for danceable rhythms with relatable storytelling.

Born out of respected rock journeymen and heralded session players, The New Black 7 was founded by lead vocalist/guitarist Tory Stoffregen and guitarist Jason K. Herman who were soon joined by drummer Brentt James Acrement and rounded out by bassist Dan Dryden. Their direction grew out of an organic love of country music's gloried past along with their admiration of current country crossovers like Blackberry Smoke and Eric Church. "God Willin' And The Creek Don't Rise" is a follow-up to 2012's "Heartbreaks And Hangovers", yielding the single "Crazy All Over Me", which garnered substantial radio and video play.

"God Willin'" was recorded at Shell Rock, Iowa's Chandler Limited Studios, in which the band utilized former Abbey Road studio gear to help give their sound a rich, beefy, vintage meets modern production. Co-produced with Wade Goeke, the band was able to blend hard-hitting country killers with a bit of somber moments while retaining continuity throughout the recording. Their blood line of rock and roll came into full effect with many of the tracks retaining a classic rock vibe throughout, yet "God Willin'" is knee deep in Southern blues, Midwest electric swing and stone cold Country twang all held together with Stoffregen's distilled voice and stout harmonies. "We're ecstatic about the future," states Stoffregen. "With every show, every relationship we build with fans and those in the industry and every recording – things are falling into place in the right way, at the right time for us."

Interestingly its was 45 degrees celsius that day (HOT) and so it was a case of strip down or die! So I played the second half in pyjamas!!! About Bethany And Rufus Roots Quartet
Bethany as the daughter of legendary 60's Folk singer Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) draws from the many songs that her father collected as part of the seminal folk movement of the 60s. Yacouba has dug deeply into the folkloric Hausa, Djerma, Peul and Songhai traditions of Niger and Bonga is the descendant of a very rich lineage of Vodou ceremonial drumming and song. Bonga has also traveled extensively through Haiti collecting and learning the different manifestations of Haitian song and folklore. Rufus has taken the cello into previously unknown realms and is noted for his collaborations in African, Arabic, and American music forms and also has a solo CD Songs for Cello on the Daqui label. Individually all of the members of the group have been instrumental in expanding the role of traditional forms in their respective musics. It is with this background that they have come together to create a sound that although based around the song forms of American traditional music reaches back to a common root that has inspired everyone involved.

Bethany as the daughter of legendary 60's Folk singer Peter Yarrow (Peter , Paul & Mary) draws from the many songs that her father collected as part of the seminal folk movement of the 60s. Yacouba has dug deeply into the folkloric Hausa, Djerma, Peul and Songhai traditions of Niger and Bonga is the descendant of a very rich lineage of Vodou ceremonial drumming and song. Bonga has also traveled extensively through Haiti collecting and learning the different manifestations of Haitian song and folklore. Rufus has taken the cello into previously unknown realms and is noted for his collaborations in African, Arabic, and American music forms and also has a solo CD Songs for Cello on the Daqui label. Individually all of the members of the group have been instrumental in expanding the role of traditional forms in their respective musics. It is with this background that they have come together to create a sound that although based around the song forms of American traditional music reaches back to a common root that has inspired everyone involved.

Technology Review: Rockster+Pro Home Studio Recording Software Package

Most home audio recording equipment is lacking in acoustics and the ability to produce a rich, vibrant sound. Rockster+Pro solves that problem by allowing the artist to choose "one of seven presets or invent their own. A GUI panel provides controls for factory and user presets, reverb time, decay and mix, heat, drive, space and dither. Reverb controls are independently adjustable for reflections from rear, side, ceiling and audience so you can design your own concert hall's size, shape, and liveliness." Another great feature is that Rockster+Pro doesn't work in real time. It analyzes the entire file before processing it, and even gives you a warning of any overages before processing modifications so you can choose to re-record the track if you want to.

With Rockster+Pro, I was able to infuse a very unique musical color into dry sounds with just my digital audio workstation. Using different settings, I managed to make my very own cello-and-piano composition sound like it was in front of me, being played live.

I have worked with various audio editing programs over the past few years, and it has always been a struggle trying to use the software's controls and settings just trying to do something really simple. That's not the deal with Rockster+Pro. You've got a clear and simple panel, 15 controllers, all with values from zero to nine. You can store and recall presets when you find just the effect you need, ranging from just barely noticeable to something entirely different.

Rockster+Pro isn't good just for making your home studio recordings sound "live". Boosted, higher harmonic frequencies and a slightly longer duration for each note of the melody gives any recording sound a much more realistic feel.

I would have liked to be able to use Rockster as a VST plug-in with FL Studio or Cubase and apply its effects in real time before having to save the file each time.

Rockster has 12 knobs (3 groups of 4) that manipulate three aspects of a sound with each one of the aspects maintaining control from a different location -- rear, side, ceiling and audience. The first group (top left four knobs) controls the time delay, the second is for the decay, and the third group is for mixing.

The first example is an upbeat composition using an accordion, guitar and trumpet:

In this example, my audio file already had studio audience recorded, so it was closer to a live performance. But by manipulating it with Rockster+Pro's settings, I was able to create a much clearer sound. As you can see, I used one of the presets provided by the program. Adjustments to the original sound were applied as such: Time delay - rear set to 7, the side to 4, ceiling 3 and audience 2. Decay is set to low levels for all directions – rear 4, side 3, ceiling 2 and audience 2. The way the mixing knobs are set, the "rear" setting receives more amplification – rear 7, side 4, ceiling 3, and audience 2. Heat, drive and space are set to 4, 4 and 5 representing a medium sized venue.

The second example is a slow cello-piano duo I composed using FL studio:

In this example, I had much calmer and low-key instruments (piano and cello). In Greece, we are more used to listening to a cello–piano duo in a smaller venue, with fewer people in the audience. At the same time, however, a smaller venue means a warmer ambience, and fewer instruments get to the audience with a distinctive and clear sound. That means less time delay, even less decay, more heat and less space.

Keeping these thoughts in mind, I tried to virtually create the best live sound possible, with the correct settings.
* Time delay is set to: rear 6, side 3, ceiling 2, and audience 1.
* Decay: rear 3, side 2, ceiling 1, audience 1.
* Mix: rear 6, side 3, ceiling 2, audience 1.
* Heat and drive were set to 6 and space set to 2.

It's pretty obvious by the examples above that Rockster+Pro is what it claims to be. I enjoyed using it, and would recommend it to any artist or musician who does home studio recording.

Song Fest On Music Row Ramps Up For June Performances

Songwriters of every genre, from the novice to the professional will converge on Music Row for The Nashville SongWriters Festival held every third weekend of June. The 2009 Song Fest is many happenings in one. It's part live music festival, part teaching conference, part business networking opportunity and part gathering of old friends. Tune smiths share their original music on multiple outdoor stages and Open Sing Rings. The jamboree is hosted by SongWritersFestival.com this June 19-21.

There will be featured writers strumming their hits and undiscovered songwriters playing new ones. Last year Sony/BMG staff writers, a gang from Warner-Chappell/Ash Street Music and many others you hear every day on the radio, shared their songs. The fest represents the past, present and future of songwriting and welcomes all forms of music. Composers are encouraged to come as they are and find their place in the mix.

She has performed in the US and Europe, and worked with many musicians of note including composer Pauline Oliveros, the late Dumisani Maraire (renowned composer from Zimbabwe) and others. She has studied with jazz great Art Lande and Latin jazz pianist extraordinaire Rebeca Maulιon, and performs regularly with the trend-setting world music group Ancient Future.

On Thursday, May 28, THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN! will celebrate the release of their debut album Love Kills (May 5 - Reversed Image, Unlimited) at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, OH. Joining them will be special guests Terry Urban, The Kick Drums, DJ Kosher Kuts, and Chip Tha Ripper.

MusicDishTV: Koko Dozo Live @ Tubway, NYC

On January 24, 2009, post-pop duo KOKO DOZO (Polarity/1 & Amy Douglas) brought their unique blend of funk/disco/dance music to Tubway in New York City. www.kokodozo.com

Koko Dozo's performance of "Boomchi" has a strong disco vibe and it is the perfect fit for the Tubway stage. Amy is on fire here with some really powerful singing (in Spanish, no less). A quick glimpse of the crowd shows that they are having a great time as well.

"Spaceman" is more of that familiar post-pop funk that Koko Dozo does so well. In this live performance, Polarity/1 is rocking the guitar while Amy sings her heart out. The song has a bit of an otherworldly vibe at times, but it is without a doubt another great jam for the party at Tubway. One thing is clear from watching both videos - Koko Dozo have a definite stage presence and know how to work a crowd!
