Tinderbox Music Festival: September 26th - Brooklyn, NY

[3:00PM, Tickets: $17 Advance/ $20 Day of Show]

Tinderbox Music Festival, which will be held on September 26, 2010, at Southpaw in Brooklyn, NY, aims to promote and coalesce the music of an eclectic group of approximately 20 female artists who span across the entire musical spectrum. Artists include Bitch, Jenny Owen Youngs,Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers and Kalae All Day, all of whom have already confirmed their performances at the festival.

Tinderbox fosters community by providing opportunities to perform, collaborate, and connect within the vibrant NYC music scene. By donating 100 % of net proceeds to organizations involved in helping the next generation of women musicians, Tinderbox strives to ensure that the fire it ignites will long outlive and outgrow the festival itself. Due to the positive feedback that Tinderbox has already accumulated, along with sponsorships from companies such as Venus Zine, BUST Magazine, and ASCAP, the festival is looking to take a showcase to the annual SXSW festival in Texas next March in hopes of garnering enough attention to create a buzz about the second Tinderbox Festival that will be held in 2011.

Hearing that the music festival, Lilith Fair, was making a comeback in 2010, multi-talented singer/songwriter, Alyson Greenfield, decided to start “Dear Lilith Fair 2010,” a blog zealously dedicated to trying to get a spot on the tour. Being named one of The Deli Magazine’s “NYC Artists on the Rise,” receiving accolades from a myriad of publications such as PASTE Magazine, and having song placements on shows on FOX, Alyson is an esteemed artist in her own right. Though many people were supportive and receptive to the blog, her plea to get on the tour fell on the deaf ears of Lilith Fair and consequently, the fervent musician took the initiative to spearhead her own music festival.

Being somewhat of a Renaissance woman, Alyson knew that her vision for the music festival could become reality with her uncanny and seemingly divine abilities to excel in many fields as well as prolifically generate grandeur out of nothingness. Her Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing; various magazine, screenplay, and acting credits; and credentials as a Board Member of the Chicago National Organization for Women, high school teacher, and tolerance educator, are all testament to her legitimate and natural ability to achieve virtually anything.

With the additional experience she gained from helping to set up and book artists for two BUST Magazine sponsored showcases, Mundi Fest and Shimmer Fest, during the annual SXSW festival in Texas, along with her frequent encounters with success, Alyson had the confidence to fashion a thrilling new festival that would later be known as Tinderbox.

TINDERBOX will be donating 100% of net proceeds to these NYC organizations:

WILLIE MAE ROCK CAMP FOR GIRLS ( http://www.williemaerockcamp.org/

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

GIRLS WRITE NOW ( http://www.girlswritenow.org/gwn/

Girls Write Now provides guidance, support, and opportunities for New York City’s underserved or at-risk high school girls, enabling them to develop their creative, independent voices, explore careers in professional writing, and learn how to make healthy choices in school, career, and life. Alyson Greenfield is an active member of this organization.

The Tinderbox team also includes:

Jennifer Newman:

Jennifer Newman is an entertainment attorney* (NY bar admission pending) in New York City as well as a singer, songwriter, and music producer.

Alicia Matusheski:

Alicia is the Manager of Business Affairs and Supervising Paralegal at Ritholz Levy Sanders Chidekel & Fields LLP, an entertainment law firm in New York City.

Presenting Sponsors are PAI Media, MusicDish/MI2N, BUST Magazine, and VENUS Zine

Video: Robert Lauri - Sweet Milla

Watch the video on MusicDishTV:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfzp86HkVcY

Robert Lauri's latest music video for the song "Sweet Milla," is full of beautiful imagery. This selection for Lauri's forthcoming album, "United Souls," is a soulful combination of picture and song. The smooth piano music is soothing and images of nature, birth and beauty evoke strong feelings of awe and inspiration. Much like Philip Glass' "Koyaanisqatsi," there is no defined story or plot here, but rather a series of moving images that fit the music perfectly and elicit raw emotions specific to the viewer. Lauri appropriately dedicates this video to the parents of the world.

Steve Garcia - "Waiting On a Train"

Listen to Steve Garcia on Fairtilizer:
http://fairtilizer.com/track/139742

Steve Garcia's latest single from his debut album, "8 West," is a catchy tune reminiscent of Bob Dylan and Jack Johnson but with a distinctive twist of his own. The guitar lines and vocals are quintessential american folk but the percussion accompaniment is a latin bongo groove. Garcia blends these two styles effortlessly and creates a seriously mellow feel. Garcia is successful in taking classic American folk themes, like riding a train home to his girl, and making them his own though innovative genre blending and a distinctive playing style.

"8 West" is due to release on August 24th on Sunset Records.

French Pop-Rock, Soul Duo, Jawen, Debuts Their First US CD Called "1,2,2 Is Five" On Believe Digital, October 19th, 2010

Website: http://www.myspace.com/jawen

JAWEN consists of two brothers, singer/guitarist Olivier and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas. They have had success in France and this CD is the first time they are bringing their music to the US and it will be available on iTunes and other online music services.

The first single from JAWEN'S CD, also called "1,2,2 is Five," is being promoted to US radio and is supported by a fun, edgy video directed by Marc Obin (Luc Besson, Guillaume Canet, Marion Cotillard).

Drawing from the flavors of funk, rock and classic soul music, they stir the pot by adding catchy hooks and an electronic vibe.

JAWEN's prior album, released in Europe in 2008 was a great success. The French magazine, "Les Inrokuptibles" said: "their music has a bright future… Jawen is an explosive discovery!" They described Jawen's music as "…a diverse musical style based on classic rock-soul songs, electro-pop, and soul music."

En Toute Independence Magazine said: "Jawen's music blends diverse and sophisticated rhythms with a little bit of jazz, and a marvelous voice... Jawen is a natural talent."

About the new CD "1,2,2 is Five" in Olivier's words:

"My vision for the CD is for it to be wide-open, but at the same time to have its own sound.
We always try to include rock, pop, R&B, and funk elements in our music. We enjoy playing diverse musical genres.

"Writing a song or a story is a unique moment in your life, we can't choose what is good or bad, we are serving the music. Thus, I would describe the new CD as a distillation of pop and soul music.
For me that era of music is open for doing whatever you want with no musical boundaries; think about food - you don't want to eat the same stuff every day.

"The single, 1,2,2 is Five is based on spontaneity. I really think that life should be lived in this way."

"Nicolas had the basic idea for the groove. The melody and the meaning should be easy to remember. I found an unusual title just for the sound of it. I was uncomfortable at first because I wasn't sure what it meant, but it was very spontaneous. In the end we have the sensation of something easily perceived by the mind."

Nicolas had a taste of America when he went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and Olivier finished his studies in London. After college, both brothers re-united and moved to Paris where they spent a couple of years songwriting and gigging. At a jam session in Paris they met bassist-producer, Yann Cortella, who was so enamored by their music that he later became the duo's producer. Not long after, the JAWEN brothers moved back to their home in Normandy to write and produce their first CD in 2007. Subsequently they released their self-produced CD in 2008 which resulted in them signing a deal with French label Neogene Music.

Olivier has written and been a featured vocalist for several artists. He was featured on Cortella's hit single, "I Feel." He also wrote songs for Michael Robinson (Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclar) and Charles West (The Golden Gate Quartet). Nicolas was also very successful - he too, played with Michael Robinson and toured with different French Hip-Hop bands.

In 2010, JAWEN began touring and promoting "1,2,2 is Five" in Europe. They opened for the soul legend Andre Williams as well as Alice Russell, Mickey Green and many more. The new CD "1,2,2 is Five," on Believe Digital Label, is the first time they are being promoted in the US.

Heavy Tunes from Steel City

Website: http://musicdish.com

The "JugendEventClub" (JEC) in Kapfenberg, Austria, attracts the attention of a nationwide public sector stakeholder in establishing the underground scene. How is it possible to do this kind of work without much money, only with hope in mind and ambition in heart? We asked Daniel Graf and Stefan Schaffer of JEC in Kapfenberg about their plans and promoting concerts in the heart of Styria, just a few miles away from Arnold Schwarzenegger's hometown.

Please let our readers know about the concept behind "JugendEventClub".

The "JugendEventClub" is a community effort. Our purpose is about consistently following this idea. In fact, our members take the decisions. It makes them more responsible. If there is a suggestion for an event by one of our members, we try to implement this idea. Each member knows about upcoming dates through our newsletter infrastructure.

When it comes to subsidized youth culture, Kapfenberg is a sleepy town in Upper Styria. How did taking a step into the direction of music underground in the "City of Böhler" (the steel and welding corporation) come to mind?

We know that it is very tough to get gigs as a newcomer band. We decided to take it into our own hands, so we turned our rehearsal room into a concert location. In fact, we were successful. We planned gigs for local bands, and with pleasure, we had the infrastructure in place and learned quite a lot. All of the income we gained through our concerts we re-invested in the show. So, it was possible to book some national "big players" for our concerts. We took a huge step, making night life in Kapfenberg grow. Our club provides newcomers with opportunities to expose themselves in front of considerable crowds. There are some critical aspects in terms of municipal development we have to explain. We "own" the only opportunity of doing shows and planning events on the municipal territory without hurdles of red-tape.

What can the audience expect from JEC in Kapfenberg? How often are concerts staged at the venue?

Our visitors will be overwhelmed by the family-like atmosphere. We are doing everything we can to make the crowd enjoy their visit. While the visitor at a big event assumes the role of spectator, at the JEC he will become part of the event. We always try to use any slot available, so it is possible to organize live performances once a month.

Are there any preferred genres you are staging? Are there any local bands involved?

We always try to provide some kind of mixture in our events. Most of the time, it is highly guitar-driven; from rock to ska to punk, metal is another genre we highlight. Local bands play an important role at the JEC. This is due to our past. We know how hard it can be to get gigs. Many famous acts from the local scene have good memories of the JEC.

The venue is an old place near the city of Kapfenberg. What's the capacity? What are the conditions bands should expect?

Our events are well-visited, but it is very difficult to increase audience figures without any support. We are trying to keep the family-like atmosphere at the JEC, and so our capacity is 200. We follow the increasing trend to organizing private parties. Conditions are very flexible. It depends on the artist.

What about sponsoring? Is there any financial support by the City of Kapfenberg, the Styrian funds or by private-sector patrons? Are there any media co-operations and how important is that kind of co-operation in this region of Austria?

We receive an annual subsidy by the Secretary of Youth in Styria. The "Pot" administered by the City of Kapfenberg is something we don't have access to (don't ask me why not). Sometimes we receive "subsidies" by them, like a bit of motivation or words. We are not scared about it, and so we're trying to find some private-sector sponsors. This kind of sponsoring is not that easy to find, but with good communication, everything is possible. Media co-operation is something, we are into. But there truly is some development work to do. Still, we're optimistic about it, because the 21st century gives us the tool of the Internet, so we are able to find different channels, to distribute our message.

Between the late 1990s and the beginning of the new century, Kapfenberg sported venues like the "Bunte Fabrik" or an annual festival called "CityRock". What happened to those "monoliths of cultural expression" in Styria?

Like before, the "Bunte Fabrik" is a spot for young people to meet and do workshops or learn about prevention of abuse. Only rarely are concerts organized, let alone pull a crowd. CityRock is a great event on May 1. Many people visit this spectacle of underground music. Only one event a year is quite lousy for a city like Kapfenberg when it is about satisfying those interested in culture. Much more should be done!

Both the gastronomy sector and nightlife are growing in Kapfenberg because of some kind of local stimulus program initiated by the City of Kapfenberg. What are your plans for turning Kapfenberg into an entertainment hot spot?

We are strict advocates of the ideas in terms of the stimulus program at the "University Kapfenberg". There are some good ideas which have gone unnoticed but have been initiated autonomously by city dwellers. The JEC prepared a catalogue of innovations and presented a dossier. We try to turn a grayish, archaic city into a green, future-oriented biotope. We try to initiate this through our events.

Are booking agents invited to learning about the meaning of your inventions in terms of event culture? How are they able to get in touch with the JEC?

Sure, we try to answer every single request. Because of our reduced financial clout, we can't fulfill all wishes in terms of co-operation. But we can try if the opportunity will make both of us happy.

Hong Kong Soundscape: Prins Nitram Live in Hong Kong w/ Logo and Sushi Robot

Since the advent of photography, music and image have always been intertwined. The photos of the jazz legends always stuck with me, giving me a unique window into some of my favorite artists and the scene they created. More recently, I've been influenced by the works of Matthew Niederhauser whose photographic anthology of Beijing's indie scene "Sound Capital" probably paints the most vivid portrait of the early days of that emerging movement.

So when I met Ka-Ho Pang on my last trip to Hong Kong, a young French contemporary photographer, the opportunity to collaborate on photographic anthology of Hong Kong's indie scene seemed ripe. Born in Paris from a family of Hong Kong origin, Ka Ho disembarked the corporate world and Paris to pursue his journey in Asia's "Fragrant Harbour".

This first edition in our photographic anthology series "Hong Kong Soundscape" were taken during Danish visual rock/jazz/electro artist Prins Nitram's only show in Hong Kong on July 17. Presented by The Underground, the concert also featured Hong Kong based psychedelic pop band Logo and live D&B electronica act Sushi Robot.

Logo perform a disparate mix of songs, inspired by their experiences of life, Hong Kong transcience and dislocation. Dark love songs and makevolent ballads emerge from the workshop where they practice, amongst stage props from forgotten parties. The trio - Chris (Lead Guitar), James (Drums & Vocal) and yan yan pang (Bass) - are presently working on their debut album set for release this fall.

That Prins Nitram is a unique artist becomes immediately apparent upon hearing this debut album, which is in fine keeping with, and at least as peculiar, self-aware and totally surprising as His Royal Oddness himself. On Bomty Bomty, Prins Nitram combines genre and traditions in his own particular way, as can also be heard on the single "Breaking Through My Peel" that is receiving airplay on the Danish Radio P3 program.

Probably the best rhythm section in the world!! The creation of Sushi Robot comes from a partnership involving three musicians wanting people to dance. Wanting people to feel the bass. To feel the beats. Made up from members of bands such as "New Yorks Finest Taxi Service", "The Projects", the Sushi's create infectious beats and solid grooves built around two drummers and a bass player. Formed after playing a one off set at J7. the reaction was so good and positive that the band had to be formed.
