Fairtrade-music.com, A Toolbox For Artists Who Want To Spread Their Music

Nowadays, it is hard for artists to gain fans and be heard, when the means necessary are not within their reach. The site helps artists who would like to develop themselves, apart from the music industry, by providing a powerful toolbox.

The concept, which combines music with fair-trade, allows artists to spread their creations among the communities of fairtrade-music.com, and on the others social networks like Facebook or Twitter. Artists have the possibility to make available to all, their songs via a secured streaming player. The main purpose is to allow everyone to share and comment on the songs they like. The service allows artists to know if they are shared or not, and be notified whenever someone is talking about them, in real time.

On fairtrade-music.com, artists can inform about dates and places of upcoming shows easily. Everybody can share the invitation with friends. One of the others functions, is that the website - as an advocate of the principle of FairTrade - enables artists to link with their profile, a Paypal account to receive directly donations from users, and being helped on their musical projects. Money is directly transferred without any commission.

The most useful aspect of fairtrade-music.com is discovery. The site features an -All Songs Wall-, where everyone can see the latest songs commented. There is also a -Latest Songs Wall-, which is a list of the last songs added. Then it is possible of see the -Top Songs- of the day, the week and the month. In fact, the more an artist is commented on, the higher he is ranked.

These functions are just some of the examples of what the service offers, which is also constantly changing, with improvements done almost everyday.

Taiwan Nights Performance Event at MIDEM 2011

Taiwan's music industry is the leading hub for developing Chinese and international artistic talent for markets around the world. Taiwan has an impressive reputation for introducing new creative talent in Mainland China who go on to become highly successful in that market. It is also successfully introducing Chinese creative talent to the international market.

Three Taiwan artists/bands who are contributing to Taiwan's succes will be performing live at MIDEM for a showcase on January 24th at 21:00 at Majestic, Salone Croisette. The talent and diversity of these musicians will convince you that "made in Taiwan" isn't applicable to just tangible goods, but music as well. They are three of countless good reasons to visit Taiwan's booth at MIDEM.

Taiwan Nights @ MIDEM 2011 January 24, 2011; Majestic Hotel, Salon Croisette. Program
21:10 to 21:40 – SUMING, The Amis All-round Artist (world/pop).
22:00 to 22:30 – Deserts & Algae, Taiwan Premier Indie Singer-Songwriter (pop).
22:50 to 23:20 – 1976, Mandarin Rock Influenced by UK Post-punk & New Wave Music (rock).

SUMING is a young Amis singer-songwriter and vocalist for the Taiwan aboriginal bands Totem and Echo G.S. His music breaks boundaries by seamlessly combining a wide range of elements from electronic pop to traditional chanting, and from folk rock to world music. SUMING received the 2009 Golden Horse Best Newcomer Award for his stellar performance in the short film "Hopscotch." The albums released when SUMING performed with Totem were both nominated for the Best Band Award by the Golden Melody Award Program. In May 2010, SUMING released his first solo album entitled "Over There Sing," which was written and performed entirely in the Amis language and characterized by exotic aboriginal music that has proven to be an unforgettable experience for mainstream listeners.

Deserts (aka Chang Xuan), Taiwan's premiere indie singer, has conquered both the alternative Taiwan music scene and the MTV Iggy offices. Her understated, stripped down folk-pop style acoustic guitar and light, transparent voice has enraptured mainstream audiences. A favorite of live music aficionados, Deserts Chang made the leap to a major record label in 2006 with her debut album "My Life Will" which received four nominations at the 2007 Golden Melody Awards, including Best Song of the Year and Best Mandarin Album. Staying true to her musical roots with an earthy selection of poetic, guitar-driven numbers resulted in her nomination for Best Lyricist at the 2008 Golden Melody Awards. In 2008, Deserts joined forces with the band Algae (bassist Sunho, guitarist Cent and guest keyboarder Hsu-Chang Chin), and in 2009, released her third album "City."

1976 has created a unique sound with a dazzling and psychedelic atmosphere which was highly influenced by the 1980's UK post-punk and new wave music, like The Smiths, New Order, and The Cure. After their fourth album, "Still the New Wave Flow," was released in Beijing, 1976 hit the road on their first tour of Japan in 2006, with performances from Nagoya to Koufu to Tokyo. In 2009, they were invited to be part of OASIS's tour in Taiwan. Their latest album, "Manic Pixie Dream Girl," received a nomination for the 21st Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan, and in 2010, 1976 won the Best Band award at the Golden Melody Awards program.

Electronica Artist JJacob Kicks Off 2011 With New Publishing Deal And Release Of New CD, "LTP Learning To Play," Now Available At CD Baby

Veiron Audio and Visual Productions announced that LTP Learning To Play, the debut album from Director/Producer JJacob is now available in CD format through both CD Baby and Unsigned CDs. The album has been available for digital download since October 22, 2010. A one year sync licensing/publishing deal was also signed with Liberty Music Trax – Canada
( http://www.libertymusictrax.com ) for four tracks from the “LTP Learning to Play” album: “Traveler I – The Journey Begins,” “Gaia,” “Uriel,” and “Learning to Play”.

JJacob and LTP Learning to Play have been having quite a bit of success on the social networking scene as well. In less than a year, JJacob’s MySpace profile alone (http://www.myspace.com/jjacobsmusic ) had more than 17,000 views and 7,000 plays. The aggregated score for all of his social networks, including ReverbNation and FaceBook, showed more than 20,000 views and 10.000 plays.

The nine track LTP Learning To Play is a combination songs based largely on the combination of the electronic genre with multiple other genres, all of which (with the exception of one) are purely instrumental. There are mixtures of rather classical instruments like pianos, violins, orchestral elements and percussions, drums and guitars. On most tracks, elements of rock dominate but under the umbrella of what one would consider electro-rock or progressive instrumental rock. Some tracks are closer to the styles of artists like Vangelis, Jean Michele Jarre and Tangerine Dream. “Learning To Play,” the only track with lyrics, and performed by singer Lola Yannopoulou, is reminiscent of Enya and the 90’s ambient scene.

Diane and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team critiqued the album, stating, "Talented artist, JJacob, releases an excellent collection of ambient Electronic music on his debut album, “LTP Learning to play.” JJacob is a self taught musician and he is not afraid to make that statement. As you listen through his entire album, one would think he had some kind of training as his music is quite melodic and has a multitude of layered sounds with a nice dynamic balance. Opening up the CD, “Traveler I - The Journey Begins,” is vibrant with a steady strong rhythm and rich synth strings. Another song, “Time noise,” is bursting with rhythmic beats swirling around the lush sounds of the synths as they build up to a grand, powerful feel. “Playground,” has mysterious sound and flows with a terrific eerie sensation. Although this album is mainly instrumentals, “Learning to Play,” features hypnotic vocals that caress the well orchestrated instrumentation. If you are a fan of Electronic music with dark tonality, then the album, “LTP Learning to play,” is just what you need to listen to."

LTP was originally based on the simple idea of learning how to play music. With the completion of each track, however, it became more apparent that the creative process was being driven by certain personal emotions which were gradually emerging. Eventually, LTP turned out to be learning to play with a sense of nature, the simple elements that have contributed to one’s life, and even the new sense of values that emerge from a child's play. The ultimate understanding is that our true existence in the universe is grounded in the grace of humble things.

LTP can be purchased at CD Baby at: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jjacob or CD Unsigned at: http://www.cdunsigned.com/cd.php?products_id=482, and at city-central major retailer stores “IANOS Chain of culture” in Greece. It will be available shortly at select major and independent music stores in Greece, Europe, the USA and Japan. The Veiron Audio and Visual productions online music store is currently under construction, but the album is now available in digital downloadable formats through the major online retailers iTunes, Amazon, Napster, eMusic, and others.

MIDEM 2011: A Conversation With The "Godfather" Of Taiwan And China's Music Industry

As China's stature on the world stage grows, so is the attention being paid to its music industry, and for good reason: With 620 million mobile users and 420 million Internet users, it already has the potential to be the world's largest music market. A consumer population that massive will also have growing influence overall on what the world listens to. What is much less understood is that when one looks at China's music industry, they are really looking at a mirror image of Taiwan's, which has played a pivotal role in the development of modern China during the last 60 years.

Consider these numbers:
* Over 80% of the music created or produced in the Greater China market comes from Taiwan.
* Taiwan's music repertoire is responsible for 70% of music sales in Mainland China, while international artists account for 12% and Jpop/Kpop sales account for 4% of sales in the China market.
* In the 2009 live performance market in China, 55 concerts featuring Taiwan artists generated US$210 Million in ticket sales.

In order to better understand this often underlooked music market, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Tsu-Tsu Wu, who is part of the Taiwanese delegation attending this year's MIDEM conference. In addition to being President of UFO Records, Mr. Wu is the Founder of The Association of Recording Copyright Owners (ARCO) and The Music Copyright Society of Chinese Taipei (MÜST). In recognition of these outstanding achievements Mr. Wu was presented the "Special Contribution Award" at the 16th Golden Melody Awards (equivalent to the Grammy Awards).

Mr. Wu was also the co-founder of the Rock Record together with Sam Duan. Later he formed UFO Records and produced, released and managed many top-chart selling pop artists. In 1993 he sold UFO Records to Warner. He was president of Warner Music in the Greater China Region for 5 years. During his time at Warner, Mr. Wu released the first Chinese international pop album, Dadawa "Sister Drum", to the world market. He also arranged Dadawa's performance at MIDEM during the mid-1990's. Sister Drum sold over a million copies worldwide. This album remains today as the only Chinese album to have sold over a million albums worldwide.

I'm pleased to share Mr. Wu's insights on Taiwan's pop music industry, it's influence on the mainland, the role of new medias in developing talent and MIDEM 2011 -
