Popkomm All Set To Relaunch In 2010

Popkomm is all set to relaunch in 2010. Boasting an innovative location, quality networking opportunities and an open day for the public, as a platform for the industry and all music fans it is now more important than ever before. "This is a rapidly changing industry and we are meeting the challenge with new ideas", said Dr. Ralf Kleinhenz, Managing Director of Popkomm GmbH. "As part of the Berlin Music Week Popkomm now no longer only gathers members of the industry, but networks increasingly with music fans, who after all form the basis of the music industry", Dr. Ralf Kleinhenz added.

The display areas at Popkomm have already been booked up for weeks. At Popkomm more than 400 exhibitors from around 20 countries will above all be aiming to establish and maintain business contacts. Industry enterprises ranging from start-ups to established player such as the majors EMI and Universal Music will be at the event. The Association of the German Music Industry (BVMI), which represents the interests of around 350 labels and music companies, will also be exhibiting at the fair, as will the Association of Independent Sound Media Companies (VUT) and the German Music Publishers' Association (DMV), which represents the interests of more than 500 music publishers throughout Germany. International associations will also be taking part, among them the International Music Managers' Forum (IMMF) and the Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA).

This year numerous companies are presenting business models which will impact the industry's future. They include digital marketing platforms (Finetunes, Zimbalam, Recordjet), an online platform for distributing music (Soundcloud), internet music television (tape.tv), a web network that streams live music at clubs and venues around the world in realtime (Awdio), personalised music television (Putpat), and a portal for reviewing bands (GIGSWIZ).

This year Canada and the Netherlands will occupy the largest national pavilions. Russia, India, South Africa, Estonia and Cameroon are at Popkomm for the first time. India is not only hosting a big lounge at Popkomm but will also make an important contribution music-wise at the Popkomm Showcase Festival. The artist Vasuda Sharma won Music2deal India's internet casting contest and will represent India's wide-ranging spectrum of music at the fair.

At Popkomm 2010 professional networking agents will be on hand for the first time at a specialist music event to make it easier for exhibitors and trade visitors to establish the right contacts. The networking agents will be available throughout the entire event and will organise networking events such as speed meetings, get-togethers and networking receptions.

The Berlin Music Week Conference will also take place for the first time inside the airport gates, where on 8 and 9 September 2010 the focus is on the latest themes and developments in the music and entertainment industry. Speakers include Erik Gilbert, Vice President of Client Strategy of the Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA), who along with others will discuss "The Future of Labels". In his role as Chairman of the Association of the German Music Industry (BVMI) Prof. Dr. Dieter Gorny will address the issue of "Strategies in Software and Music: are we on the right track?". Jacob Bilabel, founder of the Green Music Initiative, will ask "How green can music become?", and in a lecture series the US singer-songwriter and actor Jill Sobule will talk about "Love & Money - Raising your Fanbase".

This year also witnesses the debut of Popkomm's open day for the public. All music fans will be able to explore the Music City in the entrance hall of Tempelhof Airport. Inside the area where passengers used to wait for their flights, over a period of three days there will be concerts, meet & greets, acoustic sessions, film screenings and lectures. rbb's Radio Eins programme will broadcast live from the stage, the international music film festival IN-EDIT will screen music films and documentaries, and at the Popview photo exhibition young pop photographers will showcase their work. Numerous other companies, organisations and initiatives will be represented with stands and will also be organising activities for the public, including the digital distributor Finetunes, Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus, the Berlin Music Commission, the art festival transmediale and the pop-up store 8 ¬O Wochen.

Naturally the focus at Popkomm is on music, which can be heard live on stage at the Popkomm Showcase Festival. On 8 and 9 September 2010, 60 bands and solo artists will perform in front of an international audience at 11 venues on the airport grounds and at neighbouring locations in Kreuzberg. Bands include Cast of Cheers, De Staat, Jesse, Rich Aucoin, Spleen United, The Megaphonic Thrift, Therese Aune and Yes Cadets. The music will also be playing at the C-Club & Chrystal Room, Silverwings, La vie en rose, Wasserturm, SchwuZ, Passionskirche, Privatclub, Ecksteck, Lido and Comet Club. The line-up comprises acts from 20 countries and will represent all music genres. The Popkomm Festival's reputation now extends far beyond the borders of Europe, as evidenced by the presence of a growing number of artists from India, Canada, Australia and the USA. 40 hours of live music are guaranteed - with tickets costing 10 euros!

On 7 September 2010, at the opening event on the eve of Popkomm, the New Music Award will be presented for the first time. This is the successor to the RadioAward for new music, presented in 2008 and 2009. Listeners to the eight ARD radio programmes for young people - MDR SPUTNIK, YOU FM (hr), Fritz (rbb), N-JOY (NDR), on3 (BR), Bremen Vier (Radio Bremen), 103.7 UnserDing (SR) and DASDING (SWR) - were able to cast their votes online and choose four favourites from 16 nominated artists and bands. The nominees had previously competed in a band contest for a place. All four acts will perform on the evening of 7 September to contest the coveted award.

Last but not least, Jazzkomm, a showcase and business platform for musicians and jazz entrepreneurs, will take place at Popkomm for the first time this year. Jazzkomm is aimed at everyone in the jazz music scene, be they large or small, new or established entrepreneurs, insiders' tips or stars of the stage. 40 showcases have confirmed their attendance at Jazzkomm, which also hosts a conference. Starting at midday, artists will perform twenty-minute daytime showcases in front of an expert audience and music fans, among them both newcomers and established artists, at the "Friseur" at Tempelhof Airport. As this is part of the public area at Popkomm admission is free on all three days. In the evenings jazz fans can watch jazz documentaries, jointly selected in cooperation with the UNERHvñRT! Music film festival, and enjoy JAZZKOMM showcases lasting around 45 minutes at the JAZZKOMM film lounge in the frannz Club at the Kulturbrauerei in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg.

Announcing Seth Glier's "Light It Up, Let It Go" Tour Fall 2010

Songsmith, altruist & environmentalist Seth Glier combines all his passions for his run this fall. The "Light It Up, Let It Go Tour" kicks off in NYC at the Rockwood Music Hall on Sept. 24th and includes music from his forthcoming release "The Next Right Thing" (MPress Records - 2011), as well as highlights from his current album "The Trouble With People". In addition, the tour will feature special "Light It Up" events that make this different from any other tour.

Glier, who joined forces with Musicians On Call earlier this year for his "Rock For Rooms Residency", is partnering up with them again for his fall tour. The impact that visiting and performing for patients in clinics has had on the singer, inspired the premise for this tour. "For me, the 'Light It Up, Let It Go Tour' is about renewing and regenerating oneself. It's about letting go of the stage lights, monitor mixes, dressing rooms and tour gear, and using pure simple music to light up the people and places who need it the most," said Glier.

However, there is more to this tour than the clinic performances. Glier will also be hosting special "Light It Up" events including autism benefits & songwriting workshops. Showcasing some of the new music that he's crafted for his second album "The Next Right Thing" due out in January 2011 on MPress Records. More events and shows are being confirmed for the "Light it up, Let it go Tour"; stay tuned by signing up for his mailing list, and be the first to hear about the new dates and the upcoming video campaign for "The Next Right Thing."

About Seth Glier:
Singer-songwriter Glier was raised on the music of Joni Mitchell, Martin Sexton and Jeff Buckley, but he considers his brother to be his greatest influence. "My brother is autistic and non-verbal. I learned to communicate with words better once I realized how to communicate to someone without them."

Boston-based Glier is already a seasoned troubadour, having shared stages with John Mayer, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Erin McKeown and James Taylor. Other notable supporters of Glier's music include acclaimed singer-songwriters Ellis Paul and Livingston Taylor. Glier’s accomplishments surpass his age -- he has performed hundreds of shows, including a set for more than 25,000 people on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Livingston Taylor says "Listening to Seth’s music gives me hope for what’s to come. The next generation is alive and well."

As a green (environmentally conscious) artist, Glier continues to travel in his hybrid vehicle, promotes fan carpooling, & sells organic merchandise in support of his debut album "The Trouble With People," released November 3rd on MPress Records. Tinderbox fosters community by providing opportunities to perform, collaborate, and connect within the vibrant NYC music scene. By donating 100 % of net proceeds to organizations involved in helping the next generation of women musicians and writers, Tinderbox strives to ensure that the fire it ignites will long outlive and outgrow the festival itself.

"The outpouring of generosity and excitement for the festival has been amazing. We exceeded our Kickstarter fundraising goal and have secured sponsorships from companies such as Venus Zine, BUST Magazine, and ASCAP," says Alyson Greenfield, founder of the event. "Many incredible people are also volunteering their time and talents, from sound engineers to graphic designers, website problem solvers to photographers, and stage managers to street team members-- and this is one of the most exciting things to me-- the fact that we are actually building a community."

Looking ahead, Alyson and the Tinderbox team plan to take a showcase to the annual SXSW festival in Texas next March in order to begin their national live presence and help create buzz for the second Tinderbox Music Festival to be held in 2011.

The seed for Tinderbox Music Festival was planted when singer/songwriter Alyson Greenfield heard that Lilith Fair was making a comeback in 2010. Alyson decided to start "Dear Lilith Fair 2010," a blog zealously dedicated to getting a spot on the tour. Being named one of The Deli Magazine's "NYC Artists on the Rise," receiving accolades from a myriad of publications such as PASTE Magazine, and having song placements on FOX, Alyson is an esteemed artist in her own right. While blogging, Alyson received so much feedback from women musicians, pushing her to realize that even though she was glad Lilith Fair was returning, even more space was needed to showcase exciting women musicians-- and especially emerging artists.

With the additional experience Alyson gained from helping to set up and book artists for two BUST Magazine sponsored showcases during SXSW 2010, as well as forming a team including Jennifer Newman, entertainment attorney (NY bar admission pending) and singer/songwriter/producer, and Alicia Matusheski, Manager of Business Affairs and Supervising Paralegal at Ritholz Levy Sanders Chidekel & Fields LLP, Tinderbox Music Festival was formed.

TINDERBOX will be donating 100% of net proceeds to these NYC organizations:

Brazilian And Latin Sounds Romance Brooklyn's Pete's Candy Store On Sept. 14th

September 14th promises to be an exotic adventure at Brooklyn's Pete's Candy Store when singer/songwriter Maya Solovey hits the stage to take the audience on a journey to the land of Saudade, the theme for the evening. Be prepared for a night of reminiscence, love and passion as you let your thoughts go and flow while Solovey romances you with Brazilian and Latin music. To complete the experience, Solovey is bringing arepas and plantains to seduce your sense of taste prior to the performance, while you pamper yourself with the purchase of your favorite drink from the bar.

"The theme for the night -- Saudade -- is something I've always wanted to do," Solovey said. There's not usually enough time in a normal night for me to play all of my songs in Portuguese and Spanish, and my hope is that this will allow a new kind of fluidity to the evening. It's a different thing when you listen to music in a language you don't understand, because then, you listen to what the voice is saying. "Saudade" is one of the most important themes to Brazilian music and culture, and while it is said to be indescribable, the closest description is "the love that stays" when someone goes away. With this music and with this entire night, I hope to carry that theme in a way that envelops and enraptures the heart, as well as the senses."

Solovey will perform at 10:00 p.m.

As an international artist and a trilingual songwriter, Maya Solovey has merged the acoustic/folk songwriting tradition into the territories of pop, bossa nova, and even the high drama of cinematic scoring. Her music is a surprising, yet rational marriage between many cultures as she sings in Portuguese, Spanish and her native English tongue. Her new self-titled album, Maya Solovey, released July 15th, has already gathered notice from journalists and music critics. Her song "Eu Vi" was featured in a Ralph Lauren runway video for winter fashion week, while her song "Como Yo Lloro Por Ti" will be featured on a in a FIFA World Cup compilation, and another 3 songs will be featured in an upcoming shark documentary called "Shark Allies". Tom Moon, on air critic for NPR, and journalist for Rolling Stone and Spin Magazine said, "Here's a rarity: An original voice who really is original! Drawing inspiration from all over the map, Maya Solovey has developed a deep, enchanting sound that's unlike anything else out there right now." Bassy Bob Brockmann, a multiple Grammy winning producer/mixer said, "Maya Solovey is an exceptional songwriter, possessed of a voice that is haunting, soothing, and erotic all at the same time. Her music, I'm sure, will change the world."

Memphis Based Crushing Juliet Is Set To Release Its Broken Cadillac CD With Sunset Records, The Debut CVD Is Set To Hit Stores On September 14th

What is an absolute miniscule frame of pop music today, Crushing Juliet has a giant voice in so many ways. The Memphis, Tennessee based rock band, is an accessible alternative pop rock act, not only in terms of the styling, their (Crushing Juliet) debut CD, is the straight up approach to pop music today. As a product and means of expression, the debut album is flawlessly put together, with great production (David Cowell), professionally packaged, showing off what is a prized asset — for Sunset Records. It is very easy to forget that many of the pop stars of the yester year are influencing today’s pop stars with a similar scale of control with their songs. And it would no doubt be easy to appraise Crushing Juliet’s debut CD as a commercial release for the mainstream, the band is led by an impressive singer, skillful at integrating what is vocal tradition and pop rock characteristics.

Crushing Juliet is much more than your every day pop rock band. Rather, the band is releasing an album naturally understanding with a way with words, dynamic sound and with pop nuances that identity the band in a great way. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow is a top quality, catchy, proficiently tailored pop song that will very likely now be being admired by pop music fans and a young audience. The first single "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, "is being set up by the label (Sunset Records), and the album is filled with other catchy songs like the song that is also the album title name, "Broken Cadillac," to the "Kiss Me Goodbye" track and down to the closer on the debut CD, "The Words You Say," signal a serious new vocal talent in pop music today.

Broken Cadillac is less likely to be lumped into any particular style of music, and is more likely to be seen as a quality CD from beginning to end, by a band that is being set up successes all over the world. "The band has great songs" says Don Lichterman, the head of Sunset Records, and "the response to the song and the marketing stats for the song are through the roof," collaborating as teens, the four (4) piece band is made up with Justin McKee (Vocals), Steve Hatmaker (Guitar), Lonnie Hammer (Drums) and Alan Doty (Bass). The songs on Broken Cadillac do indeed sound perfect for the college, alternative, pop and sub modern radio markets. With a Mark Ronson-like production (Davis Cowell), the material on the album not only sounds like pop hits, they are also clear and alive sounding on every song. Likewise, the tracks, Round and Round, Dirty Girl and Street Walker also seem very familiar and the band (Crushing Juliet) has great promise with the release of the Broken Cadillac debut CD that is made up with eleven (11) alternative pop rock tracks:

Track Listing:
Let It Go
Street Walker
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
King And Queen
Round And Round
Not Losing You
Kiss Me Goodbye
Broken Cadillac
Someday
Dirty Girl
The Words You Say

The vocals (Justin McKee), is an instrument in itself which are coupled with capable song writing with great players and great production (David Cowell) are what make this album and band an one to look for and listen for this year.

H-II: Cancer - Faith In A Time Of Trouble

The exam is completed, cancer suspected, biopsy taken and the lab results come back positive, the next step is CAT/PET scans to grade the spread. You arrive at the hospital, the markers are injected, you drink a quart of barium and have an hour wait for the CAT scans and related diagnostic tests. The experience is surreal and brings back into focus years of interfaith studies and the scripture verses begin to replay:

"I will never leave you or forsake you"
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths."
"Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength."

CMA Artist H-II: Stephen Michael Apatow reflects upon "Faith in a Time of Trouble" in the soundtrack "Day by Day," with streaming available on AirPlay Direct:
