Artist Management Conference 2010 Highlights Important Roles Played By Managers In A Shifting Music Industry Landscape

Website: http://www.amconevent.com
Gaithersburg, MD May 3, 2010 -- The Artist Management Conference 2010 (AMCON2010), taking place in New York October 14-15, 2010, aims to highlight the important roles played by artist managers in a shifting music industry landscape, and provides a forum for networking, learning, showcasing, and conducting business.
"In an era of 'do-it-yourself' (D.I.Y) and vertical integration, stand-alone artist managers are becoming both under-appreciated and over-hyped by some in the music industry", says Jeremy Rwakaara, conference producer at the Artist Management Resource and author of the Artist Management Manual. With relatively few people having direct contact and interaction with managers, many urban myths and legends have been allowed to take root, resulting in extreme misrepresentations by some in the music industry of managers as either unscrupulous con artists of yesteryear, or omnipotent deal-makers of tomorrow.
To be sure, the behavior of some managers has helped to perpetuate the stereotypes upon which the urban legends have been built. Negative perceptions of managers have caused some music industry professionals to view managers as adversaries on a battlefield eager to extort unjustifiable concessions from them for their artists. Some artists view managers as opportunists who simply want to collect a commission for doing nothing and putting in nothing. Additionally, many independent musicians and some industry professionals believe that management representation should be reserved strictly for artists on major labels.
Yet even as the music landscape shifts and new music business models emerge, artist managers continue to play important roles in the careers of artists, and the conference serves as a forum to highlight some of those roles and re-calibrate the image of artist managers. For artists and companies within the music industry, "quality" artist managers continue to play important roles in the following ways:
• Managers help to craft winning game plans and provide effective solutions for artists, and their objective analysis helps to unearth crucial opportunities at a time when everyone is trying to figure out ways to make money in a shifting music industry landscape.
• Managers see the big picture. Musicians are often too close to their own projects to step back and see things from an outside perspective - undistorted by emotion or personal bias - and managers can help them make the right decisions for their careers based on realistic facts.
• Managers can be strong advocates for artists in communications with labels, agents, publishers, licensees, brand partners, sponsors, promoters, radio stations, etc.; and help to keep them all accountable, interested, and energized. Managers also help to translate the "band language" into "brand language" while speaking to members of the music business community.
• Managers help to encourage artists through the many moments of frustration, disappointment, self-doubt, and fatigue that artists encounter as they go about their business.
• Managers help out with the workload. There are simply too many things to be done for most artists to effectively do themselves. Managers can spend time analyzing data and paperwork and monitoring progress so that artists can create and perform their music while interacting with and growing their fan base.
• Managers act as filters and buffers to protect artists from unscrupulous individuals.
• Managers can help bring credibility to an act in negotiations with labels, sponsors and brand partners, who believe that an artist is more likely to fulfill their obligations with a strong manager on board than without.
For those interested in the field of artist management, there has never been a better time to be an artist manager. With roughly 13 million artists worldwide on MySpace alone and a limit to how many acts a manager can effectively manage at one time, there is actually a shortage of quality artist managers out there, and many more need to be encouraged to join the ranks. New tools have made the job of finding artists and analyzing data easier than ever before. And even in this D.I.Y. era, most independent artists are failing to earn a comfortable and predictable living from their music alone. Success will be attained when principled, knowledgeable, and committed managers utilizing well crafted and executed game plans are teamed up with talented and hardworking musicians.

First Acts Revealed For EuroSonic Noorderslag
Url: http://www.eurosonic-noorderslag.nl
EuroSonic Noorderslag is Europe's biggest and most important live music industry conference and showcase festival and following on from the success of artists such as Ida Maria and Casiokids this year's edition will focus on Norway. Taking place in the Netherlands from 14th – 16th January 2010, EuroSonic Noorderslag will transform the city of Groningen into a melting pot of Europe's best new European talent, ready to be discovered by both music lovers as industry professionals.
Each year EuroSonic Noorderslag focuses on a particular European country featuring performances by the best artists and dedicating conference topics to its music industry. 2010 will be the year of Norway. With its vibrant music scene, Norway offers a wide variety of the best music, ranging from hard rock to pop, from indie-dance to Norwegian metal. Confirmed artists so far are: Audrey Horne, Bernhoft, Donkeyboy, Monolithic and Rockettothesky.
In addition to the Norwegian focus, over 200 bands from all over Europe are scheduled to play at the event, all hoping to impress the festival promoters and booking agents in the audience. Confirmed acts include; Agent Fresco (IC), Choir of Young Believers (DK), Deolinda (PT), Everything Everything (GB), Go Back To The Zoo (NL), Gösta Berling Saga (SE), Jasper Erkens (BE), Joensuu 1685 (FI), Lee Everton (CH), Lucy Love (DK), Moke (NL), Rigby (NL), Sliimy (FR), So I Watch You From Afar (IR), Svjata Vatra (EE), Tim Knol (NL), Waylon (NL) and Wickeda (BG).
As the exchange and support of new music in Europe is one of the main goals of EuroSonic Noorderslag, the special European Talent Exchange Program (ETEP) was introduced in 2003. Each year ETEP brings together the leading European festivals, radio and other media and stimulates them to ‘exchange' a selection of artists. 2009 set a new record! 214 shows, with 75 European artists from 18 countries performing at 54 ETEP festivals in 20 countries. A grand total of 965 shows by 346 European artists since 2003. More information at www.etep.nl
Acts that have gone onto success and gain numerous festival gigs after performing at EuroSonic Noorderslag include; Blood Red Shoes (GB), Goose (BE), Kaizers Orchestra (NO), Lykke Li (SE), Pete Philly & Perquisite (NL), Seeed (DE), Yelle (FR) with the White Lies (GB) clocking up a massive fifteen bookings from ETEP member festivals.
"We didn't feel any pressure at EuroSonic Noorderslag this year. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what job title each member of the audience has, they are still potential fans and still have the ability to be moved and excited by your music. The whole event is in the beautiful town of Groningen and has a great vibe that comes with all early shows in bands careers. It just so happened that after our show, some of the audience became fans and thus asked us to play on some of the festivals and shows that they book and that was very flattering. From that show we were allowed to discover some beautiful areas of Europe over the summer. Parts of Southern Norway, Sweden and even as far as the Czech Republic and Poland. We feel lucky to have played, and proud we won some new fans." Charles Cave, White Lies (GB)
'EuroSonic Noorderslag is an important event for any band who wants to get gigging in mainland Europe. Tonnes of fun and seriously worthwhile.' James Yuill (GB)
"EuroSonic Noorderslag is one of those weird showcase things you do but feel uncomfortable about because it's crawling with music industry types and not many real people, a bit like SXSW. But much like SXSW, if you do a good job of it, you get some way cool stuff out of it. We found that we got offered a lot of good festival slots and started to sell out our Dutch club shows really quickly after doing it, so I reckon it was worth it. It's also in a really fucking cool town." Blood Red Shoes (GB)
"It's quite simple: we made a car called De Staat, and EuroSonic Noorderslag was our ticket to the freeway. Sure, we've done our share of dirt roads, playing local bars and small festivals. People might have heard of De Staat, but EuroSonic Noorderslag really got the thing moving. After our showcases we started playing clubs, and before we could hear one bird whistle, we were set for the summer. Festivals like Pinkpop, Lowlands, Dour, The Great Escape and Sziget are now gigs we can proudly brag about." De Staat (NL)

Amy Speace To Perform At This Year's Americana Music Festival
Amy Speace will share the stage at the 2009 Americana Music Festival and Conference with artists like Marty Stuart, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and Those Darlins in Nashville this September. The 10th annual Americana Music Festival & Conference will take place from Wednesday, September 16th through Saturday, September 19th, 2009, gathering thousands of artists, fans and industry professionals from all over the world.
Wednesday, September 16 at 10 PM
The Station Inn
402 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203
(615) 255-3307
Amy will be playing songs from her recently released album "The Killer In Me" on Wildflower Records. Critics have already been raving about the album:
"her velvety, achy voice recalls an early Lucinda Williams. Sounding grounded but wounded, Speace exudes the vulnerability of someone who's loved and lost."
- Alex Cohen, NPR.org, 6.12.09
"a deep, dark album full of lush, emotive lyrics, masterful acoustic guitar work and just the right mix of percussion to make up-tempo numbers"
- Nancy Dunham, Washington Post (DC), 6.12.09
"[Speace] will likely increase her following substantially with this album. It's a dark, deeply personal album... a rough-edged, roots-rock sound that perfectly complements Speace's unsettling lyrics."
- Jay Lustig, Newark Star Ledger (NJ), 6.26.09
"Amy Speace revels in her commanding growl on 'The Killer in Me.' Fans of Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls could connect."
- Jon Takiff, Philadelphia Daily News (PA), 6.30.09
Possessing a commanding voice, a distinctive melodic sensibility and an uncanny knack for nailing complex emotions in song, AMY SPEACE makes music that's both illuminating and effortlessly accessible. Her forthcoming release, The Killer In Me, follows her 2006 breakthrough Songs for Bright Street. While Songs won her a loyal international fan base, The Killer In Me finds the NY-based artist forging into deeper, darker lyrical and musical terrain, delivering an album of startling intimacy and resonance.

Music Matters - A Window Into The Asian Music Market
By Eric de Fontenay, MusicDish e-Journal
I've been a regular to several of the major worldwide music conferences over the years, from MIDEM (Cannes) and Popkomm (Berlin) to Canadian Music Week (Toronto). These have not only been a great opportunity to meet and do business with companies in major Western markets, but to also gain a true perspective on the challenges and opportunities specific to those markets. So, it was with quite some excitement that I made my way to Hong Kong for my first trip to Asia, and the 4th edition of Music Matters at the Grand Hyatt from June 2-4.

Nana Suryadi (Bakrie Telecom, Indonesia), Damayanti Ariandini (Viva News Indonedia), Mandar Thakur (Soundbuzz India)
From the start, it was clear that Music Matters has a distinctly different feel from most other conferences, more of what I'd call a 'family affair'. Unlike other conferences that offer a plethora of simultaneous, often lightly attended, Music Matters sets a unified program followed by all delegates. The message is clear: If you want to understand the Asian market, here is the information you will need. And whereas the other conferences make participants available to facilitate scheduling meetings in advance, Music Matters takes a completely opposite approach. "We want a free-flowing networking event where everyone has access to everyone else in a open format," explained Commercial Director Stan Ruza.
While I was initially skeptical that this would work, it ended up being a nice and productive change, especially for someone looking to build up a broad base of contacts in Asia. I left with as many contacts as I do from other conferences, even though it was much smaller -- composed mostly of decision makers from all the major Asian markets: from Tokyo to Mumbai, Sidney to Kuala Lumpur.
Japanese Nirvana
While I learned a lot about the Asian market in those 2 days, the most surprising "revelation" was actually a question: when will the Japanese music market surpass the US for the #1 position? More shocking were the estimates ranging from only 5-10 years.

Shahrum Shah (Rock Unite, Malaysia), Pushpinder "Eddy" Singh Chawla (BEAMS, India)
So what exactly is happening to justify this doomsday scenario (at least from the US perspective)? Simple: the Japanese love music, and are still more than willing to pay for it, whether old or young. Kei Ishizaka, CEO & Chairman of Universal Music LLC Japan and RIAJ (Recording Industry Association of Japan) Chairman presented some facts in his opening keynote "New Strategies & Opportunities in Japan" that might make some in the West red with envy:
* Digital sales in Japan have increased from 7.5% in 2005 to 20% in 2008
* Mobile is the driver, accounting for 89% digital sales in 2008
* Note that this is a slight drop from 94% in 2005, credited to iTunes Japan which, accounts for 50% of online sales
* Japan is the only music market where digital sales have made up for losses in physical sales - that is until 2008, when physical losses appear to be outpacing the growth of digital sales
* Japanese music consumers appear relatively price inelastic, with a willingness to pay the highest prices of any country for music: up to $4/ringtone and $30+/CD album
* The Japanese music industry is still a hit-driven one
Perhaps most importantly, the Japanese music industry has not abandoned its most profitable customers: those over 40. The dirty little secret in the US is that according to Soundscan, CD sales have fallen faster amongst those over 40, largely out of neglect by labels focused on the youth market. The Japanese music companies on the other hand, have consciously developed products for the over 40 demographic, which (i) do not download music and (ii) are willing to pay big bucks ($30+) for a high-quality CD (ie music, packaging...).
This is not to say that Japan is a complete musical nirvana: more music was acquired via illegal means (407 million tracks) than legal (329 million tracks) on mobile platforms. In 2006, the RIAJ sent over 220,000 takedown notices, and have since filed criminal charges against mobile BBS (Bulletin Board System) site operators. But despite these challenges, the Japanese market has been growing non- stop, with the exception of 2008 when it recorded a measly 3% drop in sales, which is not generally viewed as a trend for the coming years.

Canada @ MM: Neill Dixon (Canadian Music Week), Duncan McKie (CIRPA), Robert Lanni (Coalition Entertainment)
Get Me A Piece Of That Pie!
By this point, you're probably trying to devise ways to grab of a piece of the Asian pie. Think again! You're still more likely to make it in the US or Europe than earning any yens or yuans. Just like the Great Wall of China, the Asian market presents nearly insurmountable challenges for even the most savvy western artists.
First, the Asian market is completely dominated by local repertoire. Japan is actually one of the more accessible markets, with international repertoire accounting for a little over 20%; though, this has been decreasing over recent years. Look outside of Japan and the numbers are downright depressing. Take the fastest growing markets such as Malaysia, Indonesia, India and China; and their local repertoires accounts for nearly 99% of total.
Put simply, Asians want music that they are culturally/linguistically comfortable with and can relate too. Of course there is Hip Hop, Pop, and Rock throughout Asia, but it is all sung in their respective native language, with their cultural nuances. This is in complete contrast with the West where English is, for all intents and purposes, a necessity to become an international star, whether you’re called Shakira, Bjork or The Scorpions.
In addition, Asia has no long-tail effect. It is still a hit-driven market, which tends to play against foreign acts. The general consensus among conference speakers and attendees appears to be that Asian consumers are just too busy working to go hunting for new music, to listen to podcasts, or to endlessly surf social media sites.
As such, Asian consumers are much more 'captive' to recommendations and editorial leads than say the US, where we have a proud tradition of bin-diving for that rare LP - wasn't the old Napster and today's MySpace simply the digital shape of this art form? The fact that mobile drives music consumption as opposed to the net, has some part to play in this as well. For the same reason, all-you-can-eat subscription services competing with iTunes are not likely to gain a sufficient subscriber base despite the markets' sizes.

Calvin & Chris B with The Underground
But let us say, for argument's sake, that you do develop some recognition in an Asian market. How do you expect to generate money from it? You've all heard of the scourge of piracy in Asia, so I don't want to rehash the topic. Let me just leave you with this fact from Google China's Bin Lin: of the 7,000+ music services in China, only 0.1% of their offerings are legal downloads.
Licensing isn't much help either. Unlike North America and Europe, where Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) have a long history, collection agencies are relatively young in Asia and have yet to get a grip on the digital market. As a consequence, there is a lot of mistrust between publishers and PROs, which significantly hampers licensing opportunities. If one takes the Indian market for example, where 70% of music consists of soundtracks (courtesy of Bollywood), music labels have been collecting all relevant rights until recently.
Even the mature Japanese market has its eccentricities, such as songs being available free of sync licensing for commercial purposes up to one year after its release. As a consequence, success in the Japanese market may well depend on a willingness to waive sync rights for commercial use, representing an important way to break a song, explained Kimitaka Kato, Universal International Managing Director.
Are You Depressed Yet?
Frankly, I'm not! My recommendation is too look at the Far East as the Wild West: full of opportunity for those with the patience and guts too tough it out. The first lesson is that you are nobody unless you are here. Thus I made the trip to Music Matters and then to Beijing, where I met a successful music pioneer, Kenny Bloom.
Bloom, who was kindly referred to me by NARIP's (National Association of Record Industry Professionals) Tess Taylor, came to China over 20 years ago to launch Warner Music. He now runs Mogo (www.mogo.com.cn), one of the coolest video sites in China serving the young, hip (undeserved) Chinese urban youth. So why is he still in China with everything I previously mentioned?
(i) China has the largest internet population (around 300 million, ie, the entire US population)
(ii) Around 80% of Chinese internet users are music consumers (240 million)
(iii) Music was the #2 search term for the last 3 years
(iv) At $50 billion annually, China is now the 2nd largest advertising market (It just recently surpassed Japan for the #2 position)
He also has a different take on the Chinese consumer. According to Bloom, it's not so much that the Chinese are busier or harder working, but that they are in an underdeveloped media market. Media in China (TV, radio and to some extent the internet) is directly or indirectly controlled by the Communist government.
As The Economist recently noted "the proliferation of channels for media, information and entertainment offers unbounded scope for the [Chinese Communist] party to get its message across, abetted by commercial operators." One consequence of this is the sanitizing of media in order to appeal to a national audience that includes rural peasants as well as urban dwellers. It's a process not unlike our over-conglomeratized radio or broadcast TV markets, which is suffering from competition by more original and niche programming on cable, satellite and the internet.
The upside is that this presents unique opportunities to serve the growing chique urban class, which the centralized media market is incapable of satisfying; a segment Bloom estimates to be 40 million and growing. By serving this high-value segment with high-quality, original video programming, Mogo is able to attract big-name brands such as Converse that place a premium on this demographic. To some extent, Mogo is trying to do for China today what MTV did for the U.S. in the 80's.
Another Beijing-based company to watch is Yobo Music (www.yobo.com), a recommendation and discovery site for music. Its founder Allen Guo was perhaps the most eloquent at Music Matters on the need to offer Chinese consumers a variety of models and services that enhance their music experience. Only by meeting the various needs of different consumer segments -- as the Japanese music market has done so successfully -- will alternatives to piracy be sustainable.
Future revenues will be driven by value-added music services rather than easily pirated downloads or ringtones. And while advertising may seem a panacea to many in the U.S. and China (did I mention they are the 2 largest advertising markets), Allen noted some success by Yobo Music with other revenue models such as micro-payments and music gifting.
The Silver Lining
In the end, the Wild West was tamed and I believe the same will happen with China. America in its first 50 years was home to pirates (ie., privateers) and some of the worst copyright/patent infringers of the time. This is part of what lead to the growth of the young, scrappy republic. But as it matured, and itself became more of a creator/innovator, America began to place increasing value on protecting copyright/patents.
The same will be true for China. As Bloom noted, "How do you expect a people that had no concept of private ownership 10 years ago to understand, let alone value, something like copyright?" In other words, not only has copyright been a foreign concept, it would have been counter-productive to the country's development. But as it begins to export more cultural goods and develop new patents, that trend will reverse as surely as it did in the US. The only question is whether it can put the genie back in the bottle when the time comes.
I happened to arrive in Beijing on the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident. Sure enough, I could not access Twitter or YouTube, and any coverage on foreign TV channels, like BBC were blocked by a blank screen. Once the Communist Party determines that copyright is something worth putting the effort towards protecting, I wouldn't give those 7,000+ so-called music services much of a chance.

Song Fest On Music Row Ramps Up For June Performances
Songwriters of every genre, from the novice to the professional will converge on Music Row for The Nashville SongWriters Festival held every third weekend of June. The 2009 Song Fest is many happenings in one. It's part live music festival, part teaching conference, part business networking opportunity and part gathering of old friends. Tune smiths share their original music on multiple outdoor stages and Open Sing Rings. The jamboree is hosted by SongWritersFestival.com this June 19-21.
There will be featured writers strumming their hits and undiscovered songwriters playing new ones. Last year Sony/BMG staff writers, a gang from Warner-Chappell/Ash Street Music and many others you hear every day on the radio, shared their songs. The fest represents the past, present and future of songwriting and welcomes all forms of music. Composers are encouraged to come as they are and find their place in the mix.
There are 7 stages with scheduled performances and impromptu areas for unscheduled Sing Rings. From live video web cast, live Internet radio and DVD recording stage. Everyone who comes to the fest has an opportunity to share their original lyrics, song or music if they are not shy.
Along with the nonstop live music performances there are Pro Instructior classes hosted by music pros who have "been there, done that." Writers can attend all or parts of the Pro Instruction while at the fest. The tutoring is held outdoors on the grass near a shady oak tree.
The celebration also host an Open House on Music Row where participating music related businesses have an "open door" policy to take questions, exchange samples and discuss what part they play in the industry. Recording Studios, Publishers, Song Pluggers, Duplicators, Distributors, Instrument Makers and many other aspects of the music business will be represented. The Open House is a whirlwind of unscheduled meet and greets and an opportunity to run the Row.
Non Performing songwriters are also encouraged to come and collaborate with other writers. Networking and Co-writing is a crucial key to getting cuts. There will also be informational booths and a collaboration tent hosted by "Keeli". There will be a writers table where registered attendees can display their CD's.
There are no set pre qualifications to attend all or parts of the Fest. The festival is not a contest or competition, which makes for a more relaxing atmosphere. The efforts of many caring volunteers and many "Fest Heads" makes this event different. We have feel! The pros were once novices and one day some novices will be pros. Together we inspire and grow in the business of music.
The festival is put on by songwriters for songwriters. "The event does not let money get in the way of people expressing their craft." says festival founder "Popcorn" Robertson. "There is no set registration fee to attend the fest. Participants determine their "Writers Share" by their ability to help be a part of the phenomenon in it's 7th year. Some have, some have not, we all just do the best we can and that's what makes this music magic happen."
Registration is now officially open. Performing and Non performing songwriters, music related business, volunteers and the general public wishing to participate in the June 19-21-2009 activities can visit the website at http://www.SongWritersFestival.com , Email: Popcorn@SongWritersFestival.com or call 615-424-1491 or 931-296-4067 for more info.

The organisers of Music Matters - the Asia Pacific Music Forum are delighted to announce that the grand finale to this year's event at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong will feature an exclusive performance from multimillion album selling Jamie Cullum. As a part of the closing session, Jamie will be interviewed at the piano about his life and inspirations by music industry legend, Ralph Simon. Additionally, Music Matters delegates will have the unique opportunity to ask the 29-year-old singer-songwriter-pianist questions on his experiences as an artist in today's music business.
With 4 million albums sold, a Grammy, a Brit and 2 Golden Globe nominations to his name, Jamie Cullum certainly knows a lot about international success in the music industry. Rocketed to fame in his early 20's, Jamie has taken the music world by storm with a headline tour of over 40 countries, and a collection of smash hits. Now in its fourth year, Music Matters continues to attract the most prominent figures in the music business to Hong Kong.
"We are delighted to showcase such an electric and exciting success story like Jamie at our event" says Jasper Donat, Director of Hong Kong-based event organisers Branded and President of Music Matters. "By using Music Matters to announce the release of his new album Jamie is clearly indicating Asia's importance on the global music map as well as recognising the incredible opportunities that lie in this region".
"This is an incredibly exciting period in the history of the music industry as new technologies are making music available to us at all times - where, when and how we want it whilst empowering the fans to communicate with and influence their heroes." said Donat. It's part festival, part music conference, part business networking opportunity and part gathering of old friends held in Nashville, TN every third weekend of June. The live performances, education and Open House are concurrently running events. Here's a day by day account from Friday morning and continuing on till Sunday midnight.
Day 1, Friday, June 19th, 2009
It's Friday 9 AM we start with some pro instruction. Richard Adler, Grammy, Platinum/Gold recording engineer & producer talks about the nitty gritty of being in the music biz. Then Dave Gibson shares some insights and plays a few songs that have worked for him. (Texas Tattoo, Big Heart, Red White and Blue Collar, Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys, Queen Of Memphis, Daddy Never was the Cadillac Kind, Ships That Don't Come In, Jukebox In My Mind, Lonely & Gone). Following Dave is Stan Webb, SESAC Legacy Award. "I'm From the Country"(and I like it that way.), and other commercial successes. Stan talks about the realities of becoming a long term professional songwriter.
After Lunch, Steven Sharp's inside knowledge from successes of running a major label talks about, "The Politics of Getting a Song Heard and Cut". Next, entertainment law expert Bill Whitacre will take your questions on copyrights, rules on co-writing and collaboration, publishing, artist deals, digital rights and more. Finally, wrapping up the afternoon session is Radio Host Karen Reynolds, who will speak on "The business and skills of the performing songwriter".
Friday afternoon @ 5:30 PM we begin firing off the stages. Starting at the Curb Music parking, lot, it's time to begin the non stop original tunes till Sunday midnight! There are scheduled featured writer segments intermingled with regular writers. About 6:30 the writers start finding their place in the mix at the various Video, Web Cast and other outdoor theme venues. Unscheduled Create-A-Rounds pop up throughout the evening. Some writers browse a Booth or drop off their CDs to display at the Writer's Table. The stages hum till about 2 AM. As the evening winds down the hard core gather and play unplugged at the after hours Open Sing Ring. Thus begins a life changing weekend, so pace yourself.
Day 2, Saturday, June 20th, 2009
It's Saturday morning @ 10 AM, the Writers who got some rest are up-and-about getting first hand experience of the Row. The second day of the Pro Instructors classes starts with a Guitar workshop with Dave Isaacs "Driving The Groove." Next Debi Champion gives pointers on "How to Host a Successful Writers Night". Lisa Aschmann explains her concepts behind the book, "1000 Songwriting Ideas." Pete & Pat Luboff will tell ya why "Collaboration is the Key to getting songs cut." and Tirk Wilder rounds things off doing Song Critiques for students.
Also at 10 AM on Saturday the Open House begins. Fest Heads will be able to drop by participating recording studios, producers, publishers, publicists, consultants, managers, duplicators, and other trade related music businesses on or near the Row. These businesses will have an "Open Door Policy" from 10 AM-6 PM June 20th and 21st. These established Music Row businesses will offer tours of their facilities and answer questions about "What part they play in the biz?" Writers are encouraged to drop off and pick up samples of each others works.
Around noon, live music begins filling the Row again and the booths are open for traffic. Little clusters of writers develop, each sharing stories and talking shop. Everyone is laid back and having a meaningful experience thanks to the no contest, no talent search emphasis of the fest, making for a more relaxing atmosphere. At some point we present the Life Time Achievement award to the festival Grand Master. Last year Tom T. Hall took the honors and was presented the keys to Music Row. The stages close down again at 2 AM and the really late niters head for the after hours Open Sing Ring to watch the sun rise. By the end of the second day, Fest Heads have been effectively scattered from one end of the Row to the other.
Day 3, Sunday, June 21st, 2009
It's Sunday Morning 8 AM and thus begins a special Christian Music Segment at the Curb Music Parking Lot. A special emphasis on Contemporary Christian related music is pursued till noon.
10 AM, Survivors from Friday and Saturday hit the Row again! The Sunday session of the Open House begins. Fest Heads loaded down with business cards, CD's and goodie bags take advantage of the "Open Door Policy" till 6 PM.
10:30 AM, The 3rd day of Pro Instruction kicks off again and runs till about 6 PM. Starting things out is a guitar workshop by master Denny Sarokin. Then find out how to be "Ready for the Row" with Barbara Cloyd. After Barb, Bob Dellaposta will speak on "How to start and maintain a publishing company." Also critically acclaimed author and songwriter C J Watson will talk on "Everything Songwriting". Finally 15 year Music Row veteran Jo Crowe will help ya get your stuff ready to plug from publisher to label & also do song critiques for the gang.
At Noon all the stages begin firing back up, booths are open and everything hums along as usual. Some of the late-niter's begin straggling in and the party continues. Go with the flow, 12 more hours to go.
At 6 PM. If anyone wants to get married at the Fest then this is the time we do it, free of charge. Festival provides a Hall of Famer to minister the ceremony. The bride and groom read a poem or play a special tune to each other on stage, kiss and then head off to a reception nearby. Don't worry. I think there will be plenty of live entertainment.
In the evening about 8 PM we start winding down the video, web cast and other stages and Southern Fried Fest Heads start gravitating to the Curb Music Parking Lot as we get ready to Jam till midnight. Having gotten our musical fill, we yearn no more. Little elves clear the row of gear, stages, and by the next day it's like we never existed.
The week following the Fest some writers are still hanging around the Row, following up on leads and cementing plans for the future. For better or worse, at least you know your way around now.
The Nashville SongWriters Festival is many happenings in one. ASCAP, SESAC and BMI writers of all genres come together. Publishers, recording studios, producers, song pluggers, managers, and others are in attendance as a broad spectrum of the industry, past, present and future will be there getting the feel. Take in all or parts of the Fest and "Play it by ear".
Writers are encouraged to come as they are and find their place in the mix. Everyone who comes to the fest will have an opportunity to share their original lyrics, song or music. There are no set pre qualifications to play and no set registration fee to attend the Fest. Each individual determines how they can contribute to help be a part of this music magic. Many special guests and surprises await but the real featured writer is you.
So step outside the cliques and come hang with the gang. If you have a talent to contribute, the call goes out. Invite yourself to be a part of Music City history. The fest is now accepting sign ups for the June 2009 season. Throw down at this years congregation to celebrate the spirit of the songwriter.
The 3 day music peoples gathering is hosted by SongWritersFestival.com. Music Fans and the general public are also invited to attend. Plenty of free parking. Indie Extreme To Debut Independent Artist Showcase During Red Gorilla Music Fest 2009

Hit songwriters, Matt Brouwer and Evangeline, to Headline Showcase
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 2009) - The independent label management firm Indie Extreme will spotlight 4 of their independent acts during its first annual Independent Artist Showcase on the rooftop of the Blind Pig Pub on 6th Street in Austin, TX from 4 p.m. - 8pm on March 19 (Thursday).
The event which is sponsored by Stage Sponsor Initial Underwriting Group, and Silver Sponsors Music Arsenal and Project: AK- 47, which is an official part of the RedGorilla Music Fest, will feature a performance at 6 p.m. by hit singer-songwriter Matt Brouwer and at 7 p.m. by hit songwriting team, Evangeline. This will be the first appearance of these 2 artists at the premier Austin showcases during the largest gathering of music fans and industry executives in the country.
Brouwer will be performing songs from his newest album, currently in digital release, Where's Our Revolution produced by Grammy winning producer, Michael Omartian. The album has already garnered international award nominations, airplay and is currently gaining ground at college radio stations throughout the USA.
Evangeline, whose first single "Rain" from their debut album, We're Alright Down Here, rose to #129 on the Top40 MediaBase Chart in early 2008 and #9 on the Indie Top40 MediaBase Chart, will be showcasing some of their yet unrecorded songs along with the tunes from their album.
Other acts taking the stage for 20-minute sets will be Nashville- based R&B Fusion singer-songwriter Traci Root (5:30 p.m.), and California native Christian singer-songwriter Quimi (5:00 p.m.). Admission to the event is free.
"Each of our prior Indie Extreme Independent Artist Showcases at other industry events have been a huge success, so when we were offered this opportunity by RedGorilla to host a Day Party we felt it was time to expand into Austin," said company CEO Kathy Douglas, who founded the Nashville-based company in 2006. "Matt Brouwer plans to perform several selections from his limited release album. He will be joined by several of our other highly acclaimed acts that perform in a variety of musical styles. There's no doubt it will be a highlight of the RedGorilla Music Fest."
Indie Extreme moved its national headquarters from Houston to Nashville in mid- 2007. The fast-growing international firm supports independent artists and record labels by providing administrative and managerial services such as distribution, correspondence, bookkeeping, CD/merchandise fulfillment, marketing, database development, web site development, management/maintenance, e-commerce management, and the coordination of vendor services.
Douglas added that Indie Extreme is staging the Independent Artist Showcase with the RedGorilla Music Fest to help build exposure for professional and emerging independent acts.
Performing at the March 19 event will be
* Former Sony/BMG sub-label recording artist and hit singer-songwriter Matt Brouwer www.mattbro.com. The Canadian singer-songwriter has landed hits on the Billboard chart (I Shall Believe) and the New Music Weekly Hot 100, AC, Indie AC, and Top 40 charts (Surrender). His other CDs, Unlearning, B-sides Recording Vol. 1, and A Merry Little Christmas, follow his award-winning and critically acclaimed debut CD, Imagerical. Brouwer's newest album Where's Our Revolution, produced by multi -Grammy winning producer, Michael Omartian and features background vocal performances by legendary artists Amy Grant and Vince Gill.
* Evangeline www.evangelinegroup.com, a four-member band from Houston, TX led by songwriters-storytellers Jeffery Armstreet and Jonathan Barrick. The act uses its soulful pop, rock and folk-accented music to communicate the depths of life's struggles and challenges in relationships, choices, death, life and faith. Acclaimed producer and EMI recording artist Robbie Seay produced the act's first album, We're Alright Down Here, which gained national attention when it's first single (Rain) landed at #129 on the Top40 Billboard chart and #9 on the Indie Top40 Billboard chart. The song was also featured on a VH1 Radio interview segment with Evangeline and on Continental Airlines InFlight magazine playlist.
* Traci Root www.traciroot.com, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter whose performances in Southeast Asia have drawn up to 40,000 people. Songwriters Festival Ramps Up Again For June Performances
The jamboree is hosted by SongWritersFestival.com this June 19-21 and registration to attend is now officially open.
There will be featured writers strumming their hits and undiscovered songwriters playing new ones. Last year Sony/BMG staff writers, a gang from Warner-Chappell/Ash Street Music and many others you hear every day on the radio, shared their songs. The fest represents the past, present and future of songwriting, we welcome all forms of music. Composers are encouraged to come as they are and find their place in the mix.
There are several open air stages with scheduled performances and impromptu areas for unscheduled Sing Rings. Everyone who comes to the fest has an opportunity to share their original lyrics, song or music. Last year at the Curb Music Parking Lot stage, Tom T. Hall, Stella Parton and many others jumped in to lend their talents. On the Artist Building Partners Video Stage, managed by Red Starr, live videos of player performances were provided. Sure Fire Music, one of Nashville's oldest publishers along with Second Life sponsored the Web Cast Stage. Studio 33 hosted the Alley Cat Stage and more.
Running concurrently with the live performances the festival also has classes hosted by hit writers to Grammy winners. Writers can attend all or parts of the Pro Instruction while at the fest. The tutoring was held outdoors between Crystal Gayle's Building and SESAC on the grass near a shady oak tree. pros who have "been there done that" gathered to impart their secrets, personal experiences, offer song critiques and other tidbits of the music biz.
There will be a writers table where registered attendees can display their CD's. There will also be informational booths and a collaboration tent hosted by "Keeli".
There are no set pre qualifications to attend all or parts of the Fest. The festival is not a contest or competition, which makes for a more relaxing atmosphere. The efforts of caring volunteers and many "Fest Heads" makes this event different. We have feel! The pros were once novices and one day some novices will be pros. Together we inspire and grow in the business of music.
"The event does not let money get in the way of people expressing their craft." says festival founder Cornelius "Popcorn" Robertson. "There is no set registration fee to attend the fest. Participants determine their "Writers Share" by their ability to help be a part of the phenomenon. Some have, some have not, we all just do the best we can and that's what makes this music magic happen. This year, the festival has added the Tune Shop to the web site and also offers Fest Heads a way to express their support. The Tune Shop has festival related items and other memorabilia for the discriminating songwriter."
Registration is now officially open. Performing and Non performing songwriters, music related business, volunteers and the general public wishing to participate in the June 19-21-2009 activities can visit the website at www.SongWritersFestival.com or call 615-424-1491 or 931-296-4067 for more info.
