Gathering Time Sweeps March Folk Radio Chart

Gathering Time, a Long Island, New York-based folk-rock harmony trio, had both the #1 album (Keepsake) and the most-played song ("Who Knows Where the Time Goes") on folk radio in March, according to charts compiled from radio playlists submitted to the Folk DJ Listserv (FOLKDJ-L), an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in acoustic-based music on the radio. Gathering Time also had six of the 25 most-played songs, which made them the most-played artist on the chart. More than 140 DJs from throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia submitted playlists in March. The trio plans to use its Folk-radio success as a springboard to an Americana radio release in late May.

Each song on Keepsake, Gathering Time's fourth full-length CD (officially released on March 1), documents a common experience by focusing in on something tangible that represents a memory. Band member Hillary Foxsong, who conceptualized the album and curated its production, explained the idea behind it: "A Silver Star, a mom's guitar, a battle scar, a lover's letter from long ago. All are physical things imbued with greater meaning by the memories attached and the significance of what they symbolize. Each is a Keepsake."

The collection contains 14 songs, including nine by the trio's members (Foxsong, Stuart Markus and Gerry McKeveny), one song each by Long Island songwriter Martha Trachtenberg and Catskills-based songwriter Stuart Kabak, two covers of 1970s classics (including "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by the late English folk-rock singer-songwriter Sandy Denny), and an interpretation of a traditional Irish/Welsh folk ballad. Keepsake builds on the strength of the trio's previous release, When One Door Closes…, which was #3 on the international Folk-DJ chart for January 2014.

Blending many streams of folk-rock and Americana, the CD entwines multiple folk music traditions, including Irish and Appalachian folk, British-style blues, roots country, 1960s folk-rock and modern singer-songwriter. A hallmark of Keepsake is the three-part harmony for which Gathering Time has made its name on the northeast folk circuit and beyond.

The trio has drawn the attention of folk fans with a sound reminiscent of musical luminaries of the 1960s such as The Byrds, Peter, Paul & Mary, Joni Mitchell, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. However, Gathering Time's head-turning harmonies and instrumental acumen broaden its appeal to a wider audience that includes many who never considered themselves fans of folk music.

More information may be found online at www.gathering-time.com, while videos -- including one of a recent concert performance in Glen Cove -- may be viewed on the trio's website and at www.youtube.com/gatheringtimetrio.

Comments from Folk DJs:

"Keepsake, the new project from Gathering Time, is often philosophical, some-times sentimental, but ALWAYS wrapped in their magical harmonies! The new CD is certain to incite a goose bumps attack!"
- Joltin' Joe Pszonek, Radio Nowhere on WMSC (Montclair, NJ)

"With three strong songwriters whose voices blend beautifully, the future of the folk trio is in good hands. Gathering Time has really come into its own with Keepsake."
- Graham Dean, WBCR (Great Barrington, MA) and WRPI (Troy, NY)

"Tight harmonies, interesting arrangements…Energizing live performers, to boot! Gathering Time is on the rise."
- Wanda Fischer, WAMC Hudson Valley Radio (Schenectady, NY)

KEXP Radio At OFF Festival 2015

Who cares if we’re at opposite ends of the earth, as long as we’re connected through music? KEXP Radio and the OFF Festival Katowice are launching a collaborative project.

The city of Seattle, in Washington state, is at the heart of alternative music. Not just because it’s home to the legendary Sub Pop Records, long-time friends of the OFF Festival, but also thanks to KEXP, a local radio station with a worldwide audience. While the internet is certainly an important factor in their global reach (KEXP pioneered online radio and remains miles ahead of other music stations), the Seattle broadcaster has also stayed true to its mission to find and promote new and interesting sounds. KEXP has helped usher many new bands onto the American scene: the recent influx of new Icelandic music is just one example.

The OFF Festival shares the same mission: to discover and showcase interesting music, with no regard for its home country or genre. That has been the festival’s modus operandi since its inception, and for our faithful audiences, it’s been a promise of the highest quality and a great adventure.

We have so much in common that the partnership between the OFF Festival and KEXP was a natural step forward for both sides. This August, at the 10th anniversary edition of the festival, for the first time ever, we will be hosting the KEXP crew as they come to Katowice to cover the event for listeners around the world and to record their famous live sessions, which will also include performances by Polish artists.

“KEXP is thrilled to partner with the OFF festival in 2015, a beautifully curated festival featuring some of the best Polish bands alongside legends like Patti Smith and Ride, and newer projects like Run the Jewels. KEXP exists to help people discover the greatest music being made. We look forward to sharing some of the amazing artists from Poland and beyond with the KEXP audience worldwide,” says KEXP program director Kevin Cole.

“It’s a great privilege to be the second European music festival, after Iceland Airways, to partner with KEXP, and it confirms my belief that we’ve been heading in the right direction for the past ten years. It’s great to continue down that road in such excellent company. But KEXP’s presence at the OFF Festival is also an enormous opportunity for Polish artists, who will have a chance to reach out from Katowice to audiences all over the world,” adds OFF Festival program director Artur Rojek.

From the greatest alternative music stars from around the world to showcasing artists form the increasingly strong Polish scene, OFF has inspiring music in abundance.

Over the years, OFF has amassed its own demanding yet appreciative audience who come to witness Artur Rojek’s musical vision come to fruition. Having gained and a well deserved reputation in Poland and abroad, it’s not without reason that it has been said and written that OFF is the best alternative festival in this part of Europe and the only place east of Berlin where one can catch a glimpse of the boldest and eclectic acts on stages worldwide.

"Rich as the darkest Godiva chocolate, the voice gets into your bones until you can barely sleep at night and can’t get through the day without it." – Paste

Rise and Fall's soul-baring songcraft and impassioned performances are the product of an extended period during which the artist experienced a series of major life changes. "These songs are the product of the last few years of my life, which were pretty heavy," Kurtz notes. "My father died. My marriage ended. I moved from Brooklyn to New Orleans. I had a couple years of wild oat-sowing, and then I found a grand new love. There's been a lot to think about and a lot to write about, and all of that is in these songs."

The J.O.B. Scores 3rd Song On Top 40 Charts

A local Richmond rock band, 'The J.O.B.' has had their third song rise into Top 40 territory on radio spin charts in the USA (FMQB AC40 3/12/15). The song is titled RED EYE and is currently in rotation on 130+ radio stations nationwide. The number of FM stations adding RED EYE has steadily increased since the song first appeared on the national charts. A folk influenced, alternative rock song about second chances, RED EYE entered the Top 200 at #156 in November 2014. The single RED EYE was released with an accompanying music video.

Formed in 2008, The J.O.B. is currently recording their 5th studio album. Two singles from previous albums also achieved Top 40 status, "Messenger" for 5 weeks in 2012 and "Feel" for 26 weeks in 2012-2013.

"We're very excited to see people connecting with RED EYE," said Jim O'Ferrell, the band's co-founder and frontman. "If you have it cranked up in your car, it's one of those happy, high energy songs that will make you want to push the gas pedal down and feel the wind, " he said.

When asked about the song's inspiration, Jason Crawford (lead guitar) said, "We wanted to make a song that showcased our classic rock influences while still staying true to our contemporary sound... the other side of the coin."

The J.O.B. was formed originally as The Jim O'Ferrell Band by O'Ferrell and Crawford when O'Ferrell returned from the War in Iraq in 2008. Initially intended as a vehicle from which to record the powerful songs Jim had written between missions during the war, the band has evolved into a compelling alternative rock band with a prolific song portfolio. Their music has a genuine alternative rock sound with bluesy undertones and an Americana pulse to which everyone can connect and enjoy. Rounding out this four-piece group are Len DuPilka on the fretless electric bass and Eric Bandy on the drummer's throne.

At home in Virginia, The J.O.B. performs all over the region with plans for a national tour later this year. Their SHOW information is on the band's official website at http://www.thejoband.com. Their music is available on iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp and other online music services. Independent recording artists who have been added to rotation on the BN4IA include Canadian artist Beatrice Love and her songs “Cold Shoulder” and “Genuine”; Elina Vasiljeva from Latvia and her song “I Can See Changes”; “Taken Away” by the English band, The Particles; Snez and her song “Green” from Australia and there are an additional 12 independent recording artist from the international market being added by the end of June. U.S. independent recording artists who are receiving song requests include the band Leadership by Assault from Seattle and their song “Sober Up” and the song by Cutting Edge called “Venomous Love Affair” which also entered the national digital radio charts top 200 last week at #88 and the international independent digital charts at #25. The biggest surprise is the “fun, quirky, alternative” band Naked In Public and their song “Gray Haired Lady”; a song about Gray Haired Ladies, of course. BN4IA congratulates Doug Fergus and his band, Naked In Public for having the most requested song of the week.

Most of the recording artists jumping on BN4IA love the idea that the company offers a store on their site so listeners can buy the songs directly from the station as opposed to having to search for the song on the internet. According to Music Director Ricky Ric, “the bands also love the fact the listeners of the radio network dictate which songs receive the most radio airplay on BN4IA”. Ricky Ric also stated “some of the bands with the higher rotation are beginning to accomplish this by letting their fans know to do song request and purchase songs at the BN4IA music store each week”. Bands receive points each time their song is requested or when someone makes a purchase of a song or album. “It is better to let the listeners dictate what is played on the radio as opposed to having some corporation dictate it” according to Ricky Ric.

Broadcast Network For Indie Artists was formed by the independent band, Cutting Edge to help independent recording artist around the world to expose their music around the world through the stations of the network. To submit songs to BN4IA or to listen to the station, simply go to http://www.bn4ia.com

You can also listen to BN4IA by going to Shoutcast and entering bn4ia in the search bar.

HRI:UNArts Release: Rocked - Xmass 2009

Url: http://www.unarts.org
Sound: http://airplaydirect.com/music/stephenmichaelapatow3/

This year's HRI:UNArts holiday message is "Focused on Progress by Bridging Unmet Needs to Untapped Resources in our communities." Please reach out to your family, friends, neighbors and front line service programs, define their unmet needs and be a part of solution oriented strategic planning and development of efforts that can help. Many times, just disclosure of a need can help those who have the resources, move them into action.

During this next year, the Humanitarian Resource Institute United Nations Arts Initiative, will be working to establish grassroots organizers to specifically target the scope of unmet needs in a community or region.... This means 3100 U.S. counties, 50 states and territories, 192 United Nations member countries. The arts community will be the source for intensive facilitation, communications initiatives, media events, and performances. More to come.

In contemplation of the years challenges (unarts.org/news) and the motto "Work Hard, Play Hard," I arranged 7 high energy soundtracks in an album compilation entitled "Rocked" - Xmas 2009, available to radio stations on AirPlay Direct (tracks streaming online for all in continual play format).

Wishing you a blessed holiday season and happy new year,

Stephen Michael Apatow - If You Loved Me

Stephen Michael Apatow's latest track, "If You Loved Me," is an uplifting song that testifies to this artist's passion for humanitarianism and the grassroots fight against poverty. "If You Loved Me" features a driving beat behind ambient synthesized tones and rich chords. The piece builds to a thumping, danceable groove under the heartfelt lyrics. If this tune does one thing, it shows how passionate Apatow is for his music and, more importantly, for his cause.

"Thorns On A Crown" is by far her most mature work to date. In the current etch and sketch environment of musicians singing to beats generated by machines, it is refreshing to find an artist who wholeheartedly exudes meaning and truth, a feat that only a genuine musician can accomplish. She may be considered a newcomer to the music industry, but there is enough raw passion, talent, and promise on "Thorns On A Crown" to say definitively that Kirsten DeHaan will around for many years to come.

"Thorns On A Crown" Tracklisting:

1) 1984
"1984" skillfully maneuvers its way from beginning to end as DeHaan puts her vocal range along with a knack for soothing tones to good use, singing in a soft, but gutsy manner. The guitar playing over a catchy beat works well with her voice to produce a sultry and graceful fusion of folk and rock.

2) Double Or Nothing
DeHaan produces a well-crafted, solid folk-rock tune with passionate delivery over a foot-tapping guitar melody in "Double Or Nothing." The sharpness of her lyrics and gritty tone gives the song a freshness That will keep any listener engaged, even after multiple plays.

3) The Night Shift
"The Night Shift" delves into the very familiar territory of love as DeHaan's candor and humility together make this song easy to relate to. DeHaan's voice captures the feelings of a woman waiting and thirsting for love. Even the silences between notes seem to shout out her vulnerability.

4) I'm Coming Home
A piercing harmonica complements the delicacy in DeHaan's sweet voice in "I'm Coming Home." The layered sound and musicality gives a classic rock feel that is emphasized by the 'call and response' between DeHaan and the harmonica.

5) Ms. Daisy
"Ms. Daisy" builds a sweet melody around the idea of hope. Initially, the song seems inconspicuous and gentle, but DeHaan's voice is so melodious and colorful, it quickly works its way into the listener's heart and soul.

About Kirsten DeHaan
Kirsten DeHaan is a true jack of all musical trades. Not just a talented singer/songwriter and guitarist, she promotes her music via her label SirLady Records, does various philanthropic work for American soldiers in the Middle East, and is a strong and active proponent of the New York indie music scene.

DeHaan stomped onto the indie music scene to rave reviews in 2004 with her first album release "Conform." Critics compared her music to that of Nirvana, U2, and Belly. Her music has been downloaded over 1 million times via various peer-to-peer sites and featured on the hit reality shows Made and My Super Sweet Sixteen. Declaring "Conform" to be one of the most popular records next to the Killers and Ashlee Simpson by FreshFarmMusic.com, DeHaan was among five artists chosen for Men's Vogue/Hennessey Flaunt Your Taste Critics Choice Awards.
