Contemporary Chanteuse Lily Calls The West Australian Port City Of Fremantle Home

If music can be just like putting on a dress and each one has a different style, shape, colour and texture, then Lily is currently wearing a soft and flowing wine-coloured dress with a fitted bodice.

Short and just a little bit left of centre, it's a perfect Fremantle dress and equally perfect attire for the two songs the dark-haired, creamy-featured singer has recently recorded.

In Dreams With You and Love Song 612 are two songs written by fellow Fremantle singer-songwriter Billie Reid. A prolific and sometimes highly political songwriter and poet, Billie is a bit of a recluse so local studio owner Darren Halifax wanted to make sure his work was heard. Darren purchased the rights to a collection of Billie's songs, is recording them with a number of Perth singers and invited Lily to be one of them.

Fuelled by Eurasian heritage, a lust to wander and a well-stamped passport tucked into that bodice, contemporary songbird Lily calls the West Australian port city of Fremantle home. When you hear these interpretations though, you'll also wonder how big a piece of Nashville, Tennessee she carries.

The 23-year-old's recordings of Billie Reid's songs are soulfully country and with an undeniable feeling and yearning for the coast. The songs from the project have allowed her to re-interpret the songs and let imagination rule.

"We've treated the songs with a breezy tone and have taken a really human approach to them," Lily says. "It's nice to work in a style which hasn't been expected. It's totally different from what I normally sing, which is part of the point. When Lily meets Billie's songs I get totally immersed in this project and somehow the songs have become part of my own story too."

While there were originals of Billie's to listen to, Lily got the chance to interpret each song in a way which resonated with her and spoke truth from a woman's perspective.

"Once we started working on the songs, where to take them became quite obvious. With 612, his sentiment is really something I could relate to, so it was really easy to interpret the lyrics in a meaningful way.

"For In Dreams With You, I had to push it a little more to really create my own relationship with the song. Equally, that's part of the challenge of taking on someone else's songs. I think it's a greater challenge to be working with existing melodies."

In her heart, Lily is a girl bursting with stories to tell. Irrelevant of era, genre or format, the ability to tell a worthy story makes for a beguiling song. Like any good story - even someone else's - the chance for Lily to tell it in her own voice is a truly beautiful and honourable thing.

Lily can't quite put her finger on which genre of music she loves the most though. Immersing herself in the vein-deep heritage of Nashville turned all musical notions inside out. Lily tasted and flirted with everything from stomping honky-tonk to angelically soulful country before answering the call of Freo, the mighty Indian Ocean and Billie's songs.

The petite singer has always known that music was her destiny. With a father who continues to sing and drum in numerous bands and a mother who was also a singer, Lily has always been surrounded by music, so it really felt inevitable

"Unlike a lot of kids, I was quite proud of my parents' musical taste. There were a real mix of styles and genres constantly in our ears. There was a lot of Motown. Growing up, my brothers and I were surrounded by Earth Wind & Fire, the Chi-Lites and Aretha Franklin. It didn't take me long to get suckered in by the powerful emotional pull of women like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. This music became a tradition in our household."

The singer made her debut at an end of year school performance. Frightened out of her wits, she sang Summertime from Porgy and Bess and absolutely loved the experience. Next stop was the school jazz band and she never looked back.

Now with music by her side - and an ever-evolving wardrobe - Fremantle is the perfect place for Lily to take a deep cleansing breath and open her musical heart to Billie Reid's songs.

Susan Barth Makes Repeat Appearance On Sounds Like Cafe Compilation

Website: http://www.susanbarth.com/
Music: http://www.myspace.com/susanbarth

Adult Contemporary Singer-Songwriter Susan Barth has been invited to have her song "Rainbows" from her upcoming album "Songs From the Suburbs" included on the Sounds Like Cafe Compilation Album Vol. 28. Sounds Like Cafe distributes quality new music to over 1200 cafes and coffee shops throughout all states and territories of Australia. The title track to her sophomore album "Wonderland" was previously featured on the Sounds Like Cafe Compilation Album Volume 18.

"Rainbows" is a folksy tune where the lyrics evoke a sense of fantasy. A cute way of believing in all things fortune, hope and heavenly bliss. The arpeggio parts on the mandolin with a tight rhythm acoustic guitar part give this song a country-like vibe.

All it takes is one listen to singer/songwriter Susan Barth's music and you'll be both delighted and captivated by it. With a retro songwriting style and a voice described by the International News Agency as "sultry and sensuous, imbued with sincere emotions and a refreshing rebellious flair," she's at the top of her game. Susan Barth has carved a place for herself in the genre of Adult Contemporary music that recalls the glory days of 60's and 70's pop music. When asked, she describes it as "Retro - Melodic Pop with a sad side".

Although chiming guitars and eminently catchy choruses make her music instantly endearing, beneath an iridescent pop sparkle lies a dense shadowland. Clever songwriting and arrangement, catchy hooks and well placed instrumental parts are a feature of her latest album "Songs from the Suburbs," to be released in early 2010.

Susan's first three CDs captured the attention of the music industry, earning accolades. Her songs have landed in the finals in numerous songwriting contests, including the UK Songwriting Contest, Billboard Songwriting Contest and Unisong Song Contest. Susan was named Runner Up for Songwriter of the Year in 2006 and 2007 by DIY, one of the most respected indie artist networks, which also chose "Wonderland" as the 2005 Runner Up for Album of the Year. Susan has also been awarded 7 ASCAP Songwriting Merit Awards over the last few years. Hit WB TV series "Smallville" utilized the track "Feel Like A Man" from the album "This Thing" to underscore on-screen action, which was also awarded 2nd place in Billboard's Annual Songwriting Contest. She recently inked licensing deals with a trio of powerhouse companies who keep Hollywood supplied with songs.

A Review of Kotodama's "See You Tonight" (Rock/Pop)

"See You Tonight", by Kotodama is the classic story of lost love, an almost universal experience that has inspired countless artists throughout history. Whenever there is love, there must be expression. Art is summoned to express love, and music is perhaps the most used artistic medium for expression. Emotivism - a theory based on the idea that moral judgments express our feelings - makes us think whether a sad song is meant to make us feel sad, or whether a love song can only be understood if the listener has felt love in his life.

Buy music from Kotadama

The truth is, "See You Tonight", a not too loud rock ballad with a sweet, melodic line, "spoke" to a lot of people already, and it’s making its way to the top and the band is evolving in the rock/pop music world. After listening to the song, one can be reminded of Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir album, while the smooth voice of the lead singer and the way he approaches higher notes is reminiscent of James Blunt. West Coast Songwriting Competition (US) has given "See You Tonight" an honorable mention. In addition, last month KISS FM, New York, has contacted Kotadama, to congratulate the band for having the top song request at the station. Kotadama is clearly a group on the rise, so keep open eyes and more importantly, open ears, for this group is definitely going places.

"See You Tonight" By Kotadama Is The Top Song Request At KISS FM New York For 3 Weeks And Counting

Brothers Chris and Evan Brown were born and raised on a rural property on the Central Coast of NSW Australia. Both homeschooled, they've had opportunities to develop many interests from horse riding, competitive ballroom dancing and trading the stock market...

In late 2006, whilst sitting for the HSC, Chris taught himself how to play the guitar and keyboards and convinced his brother Evan to teach himself to play the drums. The band Kotadama was born! Kotadama means "Spirit of words"

Towards the end of 2007, at 19 & 21 Chris and Evan began writing and performing their own songs. With their exposure to open learning, combined with extensive travel with their dad across Australia, the two brothers developed a relatively wide perspective of the world. Kotadama create songs describing the human condition, stories of love, loss, inspiration, life and the delicate ongoing relationship between man and earth. In a world where hate, anger, and jealousy dominate, Kotadama brings a powerful essence of truth and inspiration to people everywhere

In keeping with the earthy sound, Kotadama converted a disused farm shed into a very effective recording studio. Kotadama are completing their debut album and are looking to launch their songs to the world in 2009 and tour.

EasyFever: A Tribute To The Easybeats & Stevie Wright

Albert Music will celebrate the extraordinary musical legacy of The Easybeats, by releasing EasyFever: A Tribute to the Easybeats & Stevie Wright, a superb 2CD album in celebration of this ground-breaking group.

The band – Harry Vanda, George Young, Stevie Wright, Dick Diamonde and Gordon “Snowy” Fleet – formed in Sydney in 1964 and almost immediately ‘Easy Fever’ took Australia by storm and was soon to captivate audiences overseas. Their meteoric rise to stardom was due to releasing hit single after hit single, including classics such as Friday On My Mind, Wedding Ring, She’s So Fine and Good Times. Their success saw them consistently get mobbed at airports, chased down streets and tour internationally with the Rolling Stones.

A year in the making, EasyFever sees the ‘who’s who’ of contemporary Australian music come together to pay tribute to our most popular and successful band of the 60’s, and pay homage to the band who carved the stone in the Australian musical landscape. From Jimmy Barnes to Ben Lee, from The Veronicas to Grinspoon, The Living End to Old Man River, these artists have all recorded their unique interpretation of these enduring songs from The Easybeats and Stevie Wright’s majestic musical career. As well as this disc of today’s hottest local bands tipping their hats to The Easybeats, there is also a second disc of all the original tracks.

EasyFever also features a previously unreleased Stevie Wright song, Motherfigure… with a twist. Albert Music unearthed from their vaults a never before heard track, written by Vanda & Young, initially slated to be the first single from Stevie’s never-released third solo album in the late 70’s. Now 30 years later, it will see the light of day as an amazing duet with rock legend Jimmy Barnes.

MP3: "St. Louis" by Grinspoon

The Easybeats drifted apart in 1969, however it was by no means the end of their musical careers – with Vanda and Young returning to Australia in 1973 to become house producers for the new Albert Productions record label. They wrote for and/or produced many chart topping acts including Stevie Wright, Rose Tattoo and the Angels. They also wrote and produced several major hits for John Paul Young, including Love Is In The Air, not to mention producing the first 6 albums for AC/DC.

And the accolades kept coming. In 1998 Australia Post issued a She’s So Fine stamp, celebrating the early years of Australian Rock n Roll. In 2005 Friday On My Mind was voted by APRA as the most important Australian song written in the past 75 years. Vanda and Young are also the only songwriting team inducted into the Australian ARIA Hall of Fame.

And now in 2008, Australia’s hottest and most respected artists pay tribute to The Easybeats and Stevie Wright, with electrifying interpretations of their timeless songs. Be sure to catch EasyFever!
