MusicDish*China announced the addition of British electro-pop duo Ooberfuse to its roster. MusicDish*China will be developing the Ooberfuse's presence on Chinese social and mobile media, digitally releasing a custom-edition debut EP and booking their inaugural 2016 China tour. "With hundreds of gigs around the globe under their belt, Ooberfuse is the perfect band to introduce to the world's largest music market," noted MusicDish founder Eric de Fontenay.

MusicDish And LittleE Studio Launch Crowdfunding Campaign In Support Of BodyMemory

MusicDish and LittleE Studio announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign through crowdfunding platform RocketHub. The campaign called "Sharing the Spirit of Beijing with New York Through BodyMemory" will help fund Beijing-based artist/designer and founder of LittleE Studio Yi Zhou's artist in residency at New York's Flux Factory. LittleE Studio will hold crowdfunding launch events in collaboration with Beijing eatery White Tiger Village on October 30th and Beijing Flea Market for a special Halloween BodyMemory Clinic.

The crowdfunding campaign will help Yi Zhou share the BodyMemory project with New Yorkers through a series of ready-made pieces, the "Make Your Own Finger" DIY Kit and BodyMemory Clinic customized service to cast a person's own body part into an accessory. BodyMemory creates duplicate cast models of body parts that are transformed into accessories, including fingers, nose, mouth, belly button and etc... Featured in leading press outlets such as Timeout Beijing, Cool Hunting, Crane.tv and Huffington Post, BodyMemory events has been held over twenty times in the past year in New York, Taiwan, Hong Kong and across China.

The crowdfunding also opens the launch of MusicDish Yaogun, the company's latest brand representing some of China's top and emerging music and visual artists. In addition to Yi Zhou, MusicDish Yaogun has signed top Chinese rock acts Second Hand Rose, Iron Kite and Gemini. MusicDish Yaogun will also be hosting a BodyMemory workshop at Manhattan's China Institute this coming January.

The RocketHub crowdfunding campaign can be found at http://rkthb.co/61846

Born and raised in Beijing, Yi Zhou is an artist, independent designer and founder of LittleE Studio. She received her MA in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and moved back to her hometown. Her work has covered a broad range including art, design and fashion. Most of Yi’s projects are drawn from daily life, focusing primarily on the interrelation between human relations and behavior. She takes inspiration from social issues through observation and categorization, transferring those insights and analysis into playful artistic manifestations.
http://www.bodymemory.co/

MusicDish Yaogun is an agency that represents some of China's top and up-&-coming artists that embody the spirit and attitude of Yaogun. Yaogun refers to Chinese rock, which was born mere 30 years ago and has since grown into a movement, melding rock 'n roll with its own unique characteristics and opening a new chapter in the long history of the global genre. From Iron Kite, the veteran of Yaogun’s 'Golden Age' to the iconic Second Hand Rose and groundbreaking Sino-Franco rock duo Gemini, each reflects a different facet of this unique genre. And because the 'Spirit of Chinese Rock' is not confined to music, we're also signing promising artists/designers such as Zhou Yi and her BodyMemory Project.

The Jessica Stuart Few Brings Masterclasses and Show to Beijing's DDC

Canadian indie folk-jazz power trio The Jessica Stuart Few will embark on its debut tour of China this fall with events at Beijing's DDC (Dusk to Dawn Club) on Sunday, November 8th. Starting at 3pm, bandleader Jessica Stuart will present three master classes called "Koto Talk," "Rhythm & Groove" and "Harmony & Melody" followed by a full show starting at 9:00pm. Presented by MusicDish*China, the tour is also supported by music portal Kanjian that is distributing her sophomore album "Two Sides To Every Story." The tour also includes events in Tianjin, Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan as well as dates in Japan.

Master Class #1: Koto Talk
Sunday, November 8th - 3:00-3:50 PM
Going into depth about the Japanese traditional 13-stringed harp, a descendent of the Chinese guzheng, and how it became a part of a Canadian indie folk-jazz trio's instrumentation. Learn about different types of textures and timbres that can be created by the koto and how it inspires the songwriting of The Jessica Stuart Few.

Master Class #2: Rhythm & Groove
Sunday, November 8th - 4:00-4:50 PM
Although the vast majority of what we hear on the radio is in 4/4 time, there are dozens of different rhythms and grooves out there to explore. This participatory master class will demonstrate and examine some less common rhythms, through the songs of The Jessica Stuart Few, while leading master class participants to create interesting and unusual grooves of their own.

Master Class #3: Harmony & Melody
Sunday, November 8th - 5:00-5:50 PM
The melody of a song usually gets treated as the star of the show, but what about the harmony surrounding it? This master class will give a new perspective on harmony, using the music of The Jessica Stuart Few to show how chords supporting a melody can change the sentiment of a song, and participants will be led to use their voices to create beautiful layers of harmony on the spot.

Internationally-touring indie folk-jazz power trio, The Jessica Stuart Few has one of the freshest sounds around. The band's sophomore album, Two Sides to Every Story, was released to critical acclaim, winning the 2014 international Independent Music Award (IMA) for 'Best Album' and dubbed, 'endlessly charismatic', by The Globe and Mail's Brad Wheeler. While on tour throughout North America, Asia, Europe and Australia, the band remains in regular rotation on Bravo! TV and CBC Radio while topping campus radio charts, and appearing on commercial airwaves in Japan, hitting #85 on the Tokio Top 100 and #38 on FM North Wave.

Jessica's unprecedented take on the Japanese koto (13-stringed harp), her exceptional guitar work, and signature songwriting are innovative and refreshing, earning them main stage performances at festivals worldwide. Stuart exhibits a pitch-perfect vocal sensibility reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, with stunning 3-part harmonies onstage, earning the group a spot on music industry and media's must-see lists.

Pianist/Producer Fiona Joy Tours China In Cultural Exchange

Elegant and soulful, contemporary and classical, all of these elements are part of Fiona Joy's graceful yet emotional solo piano performances of her original music, which she is sharing with Chinese audiences throughout April as part of a cultural exchange tour at the invitation of the Chinese government.

The award-winning Australian citizen is an independent artist, producer and painter known for her pioneering attitude toward composition and recording formats; she will also perform for audiophiles this May 30th at T.H.E. Show in Newport Beach, CA in the United States.

Departing from Sydney, Australia, the first leg of her tour of China includes performances at a variety of large halls and theaters, with part two of the tour to be announced next week. Cities to date include:
• 23th April - Daning Theatre (Shanghai)
• 24th April - Grand Theatre (Tianjin)
• 25th April - Grand Theatre (Linyi)
• 26th April - Concert Hall (Nanjing)
• 30th April - Xiangyang
• 3rd May - Yantai

Fiona Joy has self-released over a dozen albums, in a variety of formats including vinyl, SACD, CD, DSD and hi-quality Mp3. Her latest is Signature – Solo, a new album in which each song is a modern, (and sometimes darker) fairytale; it is her first solo piano release, produced by Cookie Marenco for Tiny Island Music. It is available for preview and purchase in a variety of physical and digital formats at http://tinyislandmusic.bandcamp.com/

Marenco shares insights on Fiona Joy's music, saying "Fiona's music is a cross between George Winston's simple melodies and Ludovico Einaudi's musical sophistication."

On this album, Fiona Joy makes her vocal debut on the song "Once Upon Impossible (Duet)." Additionally, a poignantly simple original version of the popular song "Grace" appears on the album with vocals; earlier this year, a remixed version of the song was part of this year's Best New Age Grammy®-winning album.

Concert reviewer Michael Diamond, who attended Fiona Joy's 2014 Throckmorton Theatre concert in San Francisco where she first performed "Grace" and other pieces from Signature – Solo, commented "What I appreciated most was being able to listen and watch Fiona at the piano. The passion and elegance in her performance was breathtaking, as her flawless technique combined with pure emotional expression."

The Australia-based pianist/composer/producer and, now, vocalist adds "I hope that with all of these fantastic audio formats, every fan will be reached, and you will hear my feelings in these songs; they are dedicated to saving that small place in everyone's heart, the place where fairytales linger, and where we find the strength to meet our reality...with grace."

MusicDish*China Top 10 Songs Gives Insight Into Chinese Online Fans

http://www.mi2n.com/press.php3?press_nb=179758

In 2014, MusicDish*China (独立小炒) featured over 150 songs from Western indie musicians to Chinese music platform Ximalaya since July as part of its Song Blast promotional service. Covering genres from pop, R&B, jazz, electronic and rock, many songs have generated thousands of plays on the Chinese platform, with the most listened surpassing 30,000. So what appeals to Chinese online listeners?

Pop and EDM Find Favor With Chinese Online Fans
We listed our top ten most played songs on Ximalaya below. Without a doubt, one thing they share in common is that all ten of them are enjoyable to the ears --- Chinese ears to be precise. One of the trends we have discovered is that Chinese indie listeners on Ximalaya buy more into pop and electronic music, with pop being most popular. Another pattern that drew our attention is that all of our top fours have frighteningly beautiful, melodic, yet powerful female vocals. We hope our top ten songs can give a glimpse into the style of Western acts appealing to online Chinese fans this year. So here we go:

1. "Close Your Eyes" by Roxanna
Plays: 31,427
Genre: pop, jazz
Canadian music sensation Roxanna was born in wartime Iran. Her music always has an amazing power to heal broken hearts and inspire lost souls. Resounding melody, emotional lyrics, powerful voice, and a strong accompaniment of string orchestration all together make it the most touching song. This is why Close Your Eyes managed to touch our hearts and became our top one in the list of most played songs in 2014.

2. "Run" by Marina V
Plays: 19,175
Genre: pop
Marina V has this "hauntingly beautiful voice" (LA Times) that could intoxicate us. Run is a melodic and emotional pop song that would catch your ears very easily, and probably would linger in your head for days to come. As the songwriter and producer for her own music, Marina V always integrates her childhood experiences in Russia and teenage life in America into her songs. This song won her LA Music Critic Award in 2013.

3. "Falling 4 U" by Devyn Rose
Plays: 12,673
Genre: R&B, electronic
Talented musician Devyn Rose has been producing R&B, hip-pop and remixing tapes with her unique style that combines different music genres together. This Falling 4 U is sexy, edgy, yet hits you with an attitude. Beautiful and clean melody with a strong beat-driven rhythm all together make this song a number three on our most played songs list in 2014.

4. "Tomorrow" by We Are Catalyst
Plays: 10,716
Genre: rock, electronic
Heavy metal, alternative rock and electronic, "Tomorrow" is like a standard millennial type of thing. Leading vocal has a pure and simple female voice, which adds a sense of innocence to this dark, hopeless world that was created in the song.

5. "Stuck in My Head" by Sam Ebako
Plays: 10,080
Genre: EDM
After four stunning, female voices taking over the top four spots in our chart, finally we are here with some strong, male vocal expression. Sam Ebako is a Cameroon-born singer and songwriter. Stuck in My Head actually came out after his horrible breakup with his ex-girlfriend. The sad and grieved lyrics make a sharp contrast with the strong beats and hasty rhythm; and the electronic effects added to the vocal make this song very trendy and clubby.

6. "Boom" by Lina Fouro(L4O)
Plays: 9,215
Genre: pop, electronic
L4o has always been popular among teenage girls. Her music is popping, chic and very straightforward. Catchy melodies with candid lyrics, Boom allows us to hear this simple, and maybe a little bit shy teenage girl expressing her love for her high school crush. The electronic effects and sexy vocal voice save this song from being plain, boring and too sweet.

7. "Somewhere" by Hashback Harnish
Plays: 7,343
Genre: electronic, experimental
Smoky, mysterious, and edgy. Hashback Harnish makes us enter this post-midnight world that only exists in our deep imaginations…

8. "Toxic Kisses" by SweetTooth
Plays: 6,603
Genre: rock/heavy metal
Heavy metal and electronic usually do not go along, yet Sweet Tooth surprises us by making these two comfortably compatible with each other. Toxic Kisses creates this dashingly frantic sense that would give you goose bumps from the first note.

9. "Sing Along, Sing Along" by Cookie Robinowitz
Plays: 5,803
Genre: pop
Cookie Robinowitz has successfully made this song pop-y and captivating that this song is simply enjoyable. The melody is so catchy that you would probably be singing along together right after verse one, just as the title has suggested.

10. "With You" by FM Pilots
Plays: 5,453
Genre: pop-alternative
FM Pilots is a pop-alternative band from Oklahoma. This song With You is frank, simple and clean-cut. The lead vocal has a very attractive voice, and the melody is well written and catchy. All of these make this song enjoyable and fun to listen.

Pro Soul Alliance Launches Music Production, Mixing, Mastering, Promotion & Distribution Services In China

China is a huge, emerging market for the music industry, but currently in it’s infancy, and still immature. Professional assistance is desperately needed due to crippling discouragement Chinese artists have, attributed to the pervasive downloading of music. There is also a huge lack of ‘official’ presence for foreign artists who are becoming very popular in China. partly due to the challenges of representing themselves in this daunting market. That means huge opportunity for those willing to support, develop and nurture music in China.

At the end of 2011, Pro Soul Alliance announced a new world class recording and production studio in Beijing as our first step. Now we are offering promotion, marketing, sales and distribution both within China and outside to our existing artists and Chinese artists through our local office in Beijing. Unlike other companies offering music services in China, we are based within China, and our local office is staffed with bilingual locals who know the market and culture, and have experience working with Chinese and international artists here.

Our company has been legally registered as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise in China under the name ‘敬真堂(北京)文化咨询有限公司’ Which translates to ‘Respect Truth (Beijing) Culture Consultancy Co. Ltd.’

Because China is a complex and daunting market for a foreign company, we are starting out with the following basic range of services:

For Chinese artists:
- Focusing on getting Chinese artists who are ready exposure internationally
- Getting international distribution and sales for Chinese music (iTunes, Spotify, Nokia)
- Promotion and marketing for Chinese artists overseas by connecting with interested markets and fans

For International Artists:
- Digital distribution for international artists in China (including essential mobile stores China Mobile, Unicom, Telecom)
- Promotion and marketing in China focusing on key social networking sites like Weibo, Douban, Youku
- Collaboration with Chinese artists and recording traditional Chinese instruments with local professionals

As we continue researching the industry and experimenting with new techniques for promotion and marketing music in China, we will also be offering licensing for Chinese music internationally in Film, TV, and online, expanding their revenue sources. We will also assist Chinese artists who are ready to create their own business and develop music career in China to maximize their profit and control. Of course we will also be able to assist international artists book shows and organize tours in China in future.

We have already begun assisting international artists Elika Mahony, and Hart as well as Chinese artist Abominati get exposure in China.

You can sign up right now for promotion, marketing and distribution in China with the ‘Professional Artist Management and Consulting Asia’ option on the Get Started section of our website at www.prosoul.com. For artists within China, we have a new website in Chinese with a helpful blog focused on the local market.

Death And Rebirth Of A Beijing Livehouse - A Talk With Josh Feola

By Zhang Si'an (aka Jean Sebastien Hery)

Mandarin folk artist and bandleader/guitarist for Beijing rock band Amazing Insurance Salesmen Zhang Si'an (aka Jean Sebastien Hery) sat down with Josh Feola for MusicDish*China. From D-22's death to its rebirth as XP, his online platform Pangbianr and views on the evolving Beijing scene, Josh illustrates how despite his short stay thus far in Beijing, he's carved an important role building its local music industry.

How long have you been in China and what pushed you to come here?

I've been in China for just over three years now. Originally, I came because the first job I found after graduating university was at an internet startup in Beijing. Previously, I had spent a semester in Yunnan province studying archaeology and anthropology, and for some reason felt compelled to come back to China despite no formal training in Mandarin. After a year of working in Beijing, I became interested in the music scene and decided to quit my job and focus on music.

What was your role at D22 and what is your role now at XP?

I started at D-22 as a booking assistant in November 2010. Eventually, I was doing almost all of the booking, and kept that position until D-22 closed in January 2012. At XP, I am the general manager, so I oversee all booking/event programming, the bar, the cafe, the record store, etc.

Why did D22 close and why did it re-open as XP?

D-22 reached a natural end. The bands that started out there have by now gone on to a fair amount of success and recognition. By the end, the most interesting shows at D-22 were the weekly Tuesday night experimental shows, called Zoomin' Night. So we wanted to open a new space focusing specifically on this aesthetic and this scene.

There's No Backing Out Of Dazefeast 2012!

Source: http://www.musicdish.com/mag/?id=13234
DazeFeast 2012 at Beijing's small but mighty club Dos Kolegas proved to the 1,000 plus crowd that Beijing truly is the hub of the Asian music scene. With the Beijing air quality index at an impressive level of 239 (health warnings of emergency pollution conditions) and impending clouds in the sky, nothing could hold back this critical part of the World Music Days June 23rd celebrations in the capital city.
Starting at 4 PM and ending at 4 AM, the 15-band (local save one band) showcase celebrated the diversity, dedication, unity and power of the Beijing music scene.
The set list was impressive not only in number but in range of sounds and styles: SUBS, Fever Machine, Bad Masaman, Amazing Insurance Salesmen, Residence A, Randy Able Stable, Flying Mantas, Not There, Perpetual Motion Machine, Devils at the Crossroad, Lulu Galore, Capoeira Mandinga, Richard Todd, bluegrass Jam, Sorry Darling for my Silence, Li Xia and Ember Swift.
Arriving on the scene at 8 PM, yours truly was still suffering from a toxic street taco from the night before. After a mere glance at the crowd, the feeling of enthusiasm and pure party spirit made it clear: there was to be no backing out. I was in it for the ride until 4am. Dos Kolegas put their awesome back yard to good use: beer tent, food tent (think of lamb meat on a stick and noodles), pool table tent, DJ tent, and hanging out tent were packed out. Inside the small club, the sound system was getting a full workout; things were running smooth as silk. Purple Smog, tribute band to the mighty and sacred Jimi Hendrix, was playing their last gig ever as I entered.
Lots of familiar muso faces were around, and the first person I ended up talking to was owner of Temple, another major club and hub of the local music scene. Clement Berger has been in Beijing for 8 years and when asked about the Beijing music scene, said the following: "There are different sounds, different styles. The scene is new and young and moving a lot. There is punk, metal, electric, traditional, rock. 10 percent of it is good. 2% of it is excellent. Tonight will be great. Look, it's free and that is awesome. The bands are not in it for the money. Just enough for a taxi home."
I then watched the Flying Mantas and have to say; they are talented musicians with a wave surfing (not crowd surfing) sound. If you ever want to feel like you are on a surfboard in the middle of Beijing, this is the band to see. What more do you want? Suntan oil?
The next chat was with Joris, the guitarist and singer from the wall-of-sound Devils at the Crossroad. When asked about the Beijing music scene he stated, "It is the best music scene in Asia due to Beijing being an expat and local melting pot." The changes he has seen over the last six years include, "The quality of bands and venues. Dos Kolegas is the best."
Devils at the Crossroad always pull in a crowd with their shredding, killer guitar riffs, strong stage presence and heavy head-banging sound. Needless to say, they've done it again and remain one of Beijing's front running bands in my opinion.
I was lucky to catch up with the event organizer, the legendary Badr. When asked about the difference between last year's DazeFeast and this one he said, "It's bigger, it's better organized. Now bands come to me. I don't have to find them."When questioned about where the music scene is currently at he stated, "It's at a nice stage. It is one of the most vibrant music scenes I have come across in a long time. It is happening, it is growing, it's vibrant and it is mostly amateurs so it is more genuine. It is open-minded and warm-hearted…… " How is the scene changing? "Heavy metal is on CCTV (Chinese Central Television) now and there is rock in ads for Adidas and Converse."
When asked why Beijing is the centre of the music scene in China/Asia he affirmed, "Beijing is a city of culture and music is culture. Musicians come here from all over China and this is what we have today... look at this" (he points to the 1000 + crowd, up from 7-800 last year despite a major downpour)
One of the more surprising acts of the night for me was Randy Abel Stable. A foot-stomping, banjo picking, harmonica blasting ho-down fit right in to the night's killer mix of music. Crowd sing-alongs, quirky lyrics and straight up bluegrass left me craving for some Jack Daniels and another set by these guys.
The SUBS took the stage around midnight. The SUBS have become a bit of a buzzword and hopes are high for them. Their 80's punk sound and look is far from original but certainly new to Beijing. The female vocalist puts a lot of theatrics, stage makeup, jumping and fantastic clothing into her sets. Actually, these guys (and gal) are pretty in your face and a very high-energy band. For a young scene, it is no surprise that they are gathering a bigger and bigger following. They get a good mosh-pit going, too. The first time you see them it is quite a spectacle. But then the second and third times are very much like the first and offer nothing new. However, the SUBS have packaged themselves well and are sure to go far.
I also got to check out a band called Fever Machine, who came all the way from Shanghai just to kick it for one night. Tight shredding guitar solos with an air of heaviness, a strong driving sound with flashbacks of Sabbath, they added plenty to the night of musical delight. I personally think they should all move to Beijing. That way we could see them more often.
Next up, I spoke with Zhang Si'an (Jean-Sébastien Héry), front man of the Amazing Insurance Salesman It would take a full feature to get into what he does, so let me just call him "Mr. All Things Music In Many Languages And Styles." When asked where the scene is headed, he answered, "No idea where it's going. It has been a long road."When questioned on who is going to break big in Beijing, he stated, "Apart from us, don't see whom." I would have to agree.
Their amazing set at DazeFeast featured their attention grabbing fusion rock sound and rounded it off with beer bottle slide guitar, full-on crowd interaction and crowd surfing. These guys, to put it simply, never disappoint. Add into the Insurance package an amazing drummer (think Animal in the Muppets) and a red-trouser wearing pipe-smoking maniac of a bass player. Yes indeed. If I could turn myself into a fancy record-producer, I'd be quitting my day job tomorrow.
Beijing metal-god Jaime from the popular Bad Mamasan had some good insights to share about the local scene.
When asked where the scene has been he alleged "Developing." When questioned where it is going, the answer was: "Developing faster. There are going to be some real pop stars coming out of these groups. Things are accelerating."His prediction of the breaking band? "The K. Actually a number of bands could with the right producer."Other predictions? "We are going to blow the roof off of this (M*F*) place tonight!"
When asked what makes Beijing the centre of all things music, he said, "It's the political seat of the country, very working man. The Northern China mentality goes well with art, art is dirty."
Bad Mamasan is a true homage to old school heavy metal. Their set consisted of ear-splitting covers complete with power stances. Head-banging metal devotees went wild. Broken strings, flying hair, fast riffs, soaring vocals and a high-speed mosh pit. Is metal dead? The unequivocal answer is 'Hell No!' Don't believe me? Well, then go see Bad Mamasan.
At 3 AM, Not There took the stage. How could a band possibly follow up from a day like that? Answer: They could. The hard-core hanger-on-ers were still going strong. Some were muddy (it had POURED down earlier), some were drunk. And there was some super free-style dancing going on. And yes, we were all in a daze.
Not There had an electro-keyboard, smooth solid bass, and funky snazzy drum sound featuring electronic calls to outer space: it was a Close Encounters of the Third Kind vibe and what better time for aliens to land in Beijing than Dos Kolegas at 4 am in the morning? The perfect closing to a perfect event, indeed.
