Berklee Hosts Its 10th Annual SXSW Party: Boston And Beyond On Thursday, March 19

Berklee College of Music, the only college to host an official party at the SXSW Music Festival, presents its SXSW Party: Boston and Beyond on Thursday, March 19, noon – 8:00 p.m., at Brush Square Park West Tent, located at 409 East 5th St. (Neches and 5th), Austin, TX. Berklee's 10th annual SXSW Party is presented by The Red Room @ Cafe 939, Alumni Affairs, Heavy Rotation Records (HRR), and media sponsor Vanyaland.

Vanyaland will stream the event at Vanyaland.com and at VanyaRadio.

The party features up-and-coming Berklee alumni and students performing rock, pop, electronic, Americana and folk. Artists include Joy Daniels, Avers, Hooka Hey, O Conqueror, Grey Season (HRR), The Ballroom Thieves, Night Lights (HRR), Radclyffe Hall, Yellerkin, and St. Nothing.

Check out the artists on VanyaRadio's Boston and Beyond sampler at https://soundcloud.com/vanyaradio/sets/boston-beyond-2015-vanyaland

This year, Berklee has added a second stage for acoustic sets. Students Rachael Wolff, Lady Rogo, and Jacob George, and alumnus Oliver Monaco will perform in between bands. They also play on Saturday, March 21, at the Berklee Guitar and Songwriting Showcase [2:00 pm, St. David's Bethel Hall].

Berklee's SXSW Party: Boston and Beyond is all ages and open to SXSW badge holders. The public can email sxswrsvp@berklee.edu to attend free of charge.

Artists in order of appearance:

Joy Daniels is a Los Angeles-based alumna singer-songwriter and producer who fuses innovative hip-hop and passionate vocals to lyrics and music that explore the complexities of the human spirit. Daniels has released albums including Electric Soul Music and Joy After the Rain, and has performed recently with Stevie Wonder, Sam Smith, and Bastille in concert and TV appearances on The Ellen Degeneres Show, The American Music Awards, and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Avers, from Richmond, VA, are psychedelic pop, blistering garage rock, and fuzzed-out shoegaze all in one. With their amps cranked high and their voices doused in reverb, Avers brew a spacey swirl. The group formed with Head and the Heart's Tyler Williams on drums and James Mason, James Lloyd Hodges, alumna Alexandra Spalding, Adrian Olsen, and Charlie Glenn swapping between bass, guitar and keyboard. Their debut, Empty Light, came out in 2014.

Hooka Hey, from Austin, TX, plays heavy grooves steeped in the blues. Its smoky, sludgy sound is dense and charged like an approaching rainstorm. The band is composed of Alex Kane (bass), Hugo de Saint Quentin (guitar), Jesse Houghton (guitar), and alumnus Ethan Yeager (drums). KUTX's Austin Music Minute said of Hooka Hey, "There's a reverence here for the kind of serious rockin' out that leaves you sweaty, grimy and wanting more."

O Conqueror was formed in 2012 by songwriter Dustin Doering (vocals) in Austin, Texas. It has since become a collective endeavor consisting of Justin Green (guitar), Mike Fisher (bass, backing vocals), Pedro Corsetti (drums), and alumnus Alex Hartley (keyboard). The group is preparing to release its second album, on which it promises a melodic journey of catchy brooding hooks folded into ambient folk with elements of delta blues and psychedelic western.

Grey Season (HRR) perform five-part harmony, blues-rooted guitar solos between wholehearted lyricism, and memorable melodies driven by bouzoukis and banjos. Benny Grotto (Dresden Dolls) and Grammy–winner Justin Guip produced its debut album at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. The group is composed of Ian Jones (bass, vocals); alumni Jon Mills (guitar, vocals, Irish bouzouki) and Matt Knelman (guitar, vocals); and students Chris Bloniarz (banjo, piano, mandolin, vocals), and Ben Burns (drums, vocals). Grey Season appears on HRR's Dorm Sessions 10. Listen at SoundCloud.com/HeavyRotationRecords.

The Ballroom Thieves – Devin Mauch (percussion), alumna Calin Peters (cello), and Martin Earley (guitar) – blend folk conventions with modern hymnals, and delta blues with rich harmonies, exploring the basic constructions of pop music while also rejecting its restrictions. Supporting their debut, A Wolf in the Doorway, The Ballroom Thieves will open the next Boston Calling Festival featuring Pixies, My Morning Jacket, and St. Vincent.

Night Lights (HRR) brings together students and alumni with a world of indie, rock, and soul influences, striking a balance between profound lyrics, hooky melodies, and danceable music. Yusuke Sato's intricate riffs, Drew Story's warped soundscapes, Jeff Kinsey's melodic bass, Dag Hanken's colorful rhythms, and Mau Jiminez's captivating guitar and other-worldly voice effects combine for an audio adventure. Night Lights appeared on HRR's Dorm Sessions 9. The band's forthcoming EP was produced by Griffin Rodriguez (Beirut, Modest Mouse).

Radclyffe Hall – alumni Dhy Berry (keys/vocals), Jaqui Rae Stewart (keys/vocals), and Carl Harkness (drums), and student Sean Camargo (drums) – began as an experiment in analog and digital production and coalesced around founder Berry's groove-heavy compositions and dance-pop aesthetics. In their recordings and live shows, Radclyffe Hall has solidified an indelible sonic signature of pulsating live and programmed beats, ethereal vocals, and fuzzy bass lines.

Yellerkin is a rising indie duo from Brooklyn comprised of Adrian Galvin and alumnus Luca Buccellati, childhood friends who have known each other for over 20 years. Originally from the woods of Katonah, NY, they reunited after college, helping one another to yell their stories of love and family. Yellerkin released their debut self-titled EP in 2014, which features the single "Solar Laws." The duo recently opened up for Dr. Dog and is preparing to release new music.

St. Nothing is a string-driven electropop group consisting of Marco Lawrence (singer-songwriter, producer), Sophia Carreras (guitar), Meredith Nero (viola), Jenna Calabro (cello) and alumnus Felix Nicholson (drums). In the past year, the group was nominated for two Boston Music Awards, opened the Boston Calling Music Festival, and performed with artists like Juana Molina, Young Galaxy, Alpine, and Freezepop. The group is working on its debut album.

First Acts Revealed For EuroSonic Noorderslag

Url: http://www.eurosonic-noorderslag.nl

EuroSonic Noorderslag is Europe's biggest and most important live music industry conference and showcase festival and following on from the success of artists such as Ida Maria and Casiokids this year's edition will focus on Norway. Taking place in the Netherlands from 14th – 16th January 2010, EuroSonic Noorderslag will transform the city of Groningen into a melting pot of Europe's best new European talent, ready to be discovered by both music lovers as industry professionals.

Each year EuroSonic Noorderslag focuses on a particular European country featuring performances by the best artists and dedicating conference topics to its music industry. 2010 will be the year of Norway. With its vibrant music scene, Norway offers a wide variety of the best music, ranging from hard rock to pop, from indie-dance to Norwegian metal. Confirmed artists so far are: Audrey Horne, Bernhoft, Donkeyboy, Monolithic and Rockettothesky.

In addition to the Norwegian focus, over 200 bands from all over Europe are scheduled to play at the event, all hoping to impress the festival promoters and booking agents in the audience. Confirmed acts include; Agent Fresco (IC), Choir of Young Believers (DK), Deolinda (PT), Everything Everything (GB), Go Back To The Zoo (NL), Gösta Berling Saga (SE), Jasper Erkens (BE), Joensuu 1685 (FI), Lee Everton (CH), Lucy Love (DK), Moke (NL), Rigby (NL), Sliimy (FR), So I Watch You From Afar (IR), Svjata Vatra (EE), Tim Knol (NL), Waylon (NL) and Wickeda (BG).
As the exchange and support of new music in Europe is one of the main goals of EuroSonic Noorderslag, the special European Talent Exchange Program (ETEP) was introduced in 2003. Each year ETEP brings together the leading European festivals, radio and other media and stimulates them to ‘exchange' a selection of artists. 2009 set a new record! 214 shows, with 75 European artists from 18 countries performing at 54 ETEP festivals in 20 countries. A grand total of 965 shows by 346 European artists since 2003. More information at www.etep.nl

Acts that have gone onto success and gain numerous festival gigs after performing at EuroSonic Noorderslag include; Blood Red Shoes (GB), Goose (BE), Kaizers Orchestra (NO), Lykke Li (SE), Pete Philly & Perquisite (NL), Seeed (DE), Yelle (FR) with the White Lies (GB) clocking up a massive fifteen bookings from ETEP member festivals.

"We didn't feel any pressure at EuroSonic Noorderslag this year. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what job title each member of the audience has, they are still potential fans and still have the ability to be moved and excited by your music. The whole event is in the beautiful town of Groningen and has a great vibe that comes with all early shows in bands careers. It just so happened that after our show, some of the audience became fans and thus asked us to play on some of the festivals and shows that they book and that was very flattering. From that show we were allowed to discover some beautiful areas of Europe over the summer. Parts of Southern Norway, Sweden and even as far as the Czech Republic and Poland. We feel lucky to have played, and proud we won some new fans." Charles Cave, White Lies (GB)

'EuroSonic Noorderslag is an important event for any band who wants to get gigging in mainland Europe. Tonnes of fun and seriously worthwhile.' James Yuill (GB)

"EuroSonic Noorderslag is one of those weird showcase things you do but feel uncomfortable about because it's crawling with music industry types and not many real people, a bit like SXSW. But much like SXSW, if you do a good job of it, you get some way cool stuff out of it. We found that we got offered a lot of good festival slots and started to sell out our Dutch club shows really quickly after doing it, so I reckon it was worth it. It's also in a really fucking cool town." Blood Red Shoes (GB)

"It's quite simple: we made a car called De Staat, and EuroSonic Noorderslag was our ticket to the freeway. Sure, we've done our share of dirt roads, playing local bars and small festivals. People might have heard of De Staat, but EuroSonic Noorderslag really got the thing moving. After our showcases we started playing clubs, and before we could hear one bird whistle, we were set for the summer. Festivals like Pinkpop, Lowlands, Dour, The Great Escape and Sziget are now gigs we can proudly brag about." De Staat (NL)

The Witchwood School Of Rock Meets Kerchoonz

By Michele Wilson-Morris, MusicDish e-Journal

Have you ever heard the expression 'from the mouths of babes'? Well, in a small English village called Shipton-Under-Wychwood, there are 35 'babes' who are making music, sweet music. Ranging in ages 6-15, these youngsters composed, performed live, and recorded their very own songs which are now available for your listening pleasure at www.Kerchoonz.com/secretmusic.

How did such a thing come about? Well, the children are all students of the Witchwood School of Rock, which was founded in January 2009 by Sandy Chalmers, Aldie Chalmers, and Lee Wyatt-Buchan. According to Wyatt-Buchan, "the school was created as an opportunity for the children and teenagers of the local community to give them an opportunity to learn and play instruments, learn and understand musical composition, play music with other kids in band situations, record material, and play live on stage."

Pulling this off took a bit of finessing, but the Chalmers and Wyatt-Buchan took advantage of the last school break by holding a weeklong workshop that focused on song writing, song structure and recording. Of the 50 students (ages 6 – 18) who currently attend the Witchwood School of Rock, 35 participated in the workshop which focused on song writing, song structure and recording. They formed groups (with the exception of one budding artist -- 15 year old Tom Taylor who challenged himself even more by going solo), and wrote and recorded the music. This is pretty impressive since none of them had ever even been in a recording studio before. (And how many adult artists can actually compose, learn, and record a song in just 5 days from start to finish, hmm..?) The experience level of the students vary from being self taught to having private lessons, but most learned the basics through the Witchwood School of Rock by attending sessions on a weekly basis.

On April 17th, most of the Witchwood kids will be performing their music live in a showcase/fundraising gig in Shipton. The group (or soloist) that has received the most plays and downloads on the Kerchoonz.com website will take home a portable digital recording studio. The kids are excited, as are friends and family, who are diligently downloading. Think of it as a smaller version of American Idol if you will, but you don't have to call or text... just listen and download your favorite(s). The event will also serve the purpose of helping to purchase equipment (such as a PA system), and additional instruments, because not all of the children have their own. But while they might not own an instrument, they definitely play them – electric guitars, bass guitar, acoustic guitars, keyboards, and drums. There are also some very talented lyricists and vocalists as well.

Wyatt-Buchan's main concern is developing and maintaining their passion for music. "We as teachers are just passing on our years of experience from writing, playing live, and recording to the kids in the hope that they will enjoy it and that it will stay with them through life."

The Witchwood School of Rock is planning to once again showcase their talent in May, followed by an event to be held in the latter part of 2009 in which established bands will be invited to play. And in the meantime, any donations to the school will be accepted and appreciated.

Named by WFUV to its "Top 16 To Watch" list last year, Amy Speace is an Americana-rock artist who draws comparisons to Roseanne Cash, Lucinda Williams and Neko Case. Her sophomore album "The Killer In Me", produced by James Mastro and engineered by Mitch Easter, features 12 new songs and 2 duets with Ian Hunter and "is a collection of alt-country gems, a little dark around the edges. As a singer, she's got a soulful voice that grabs your ears. Take note, Amy is one artist you won't want to miss." (John Platt, host of "The Sunday Breakfast " WFUV).

What they're saying about "The Killer In Me":

"If you thought that "Songs For Bright Street", her previous effort was already worth your attention, then this "Killer In Me" (released early March) will certainly be an album you have to ad to your collection!" - Mr Blue Boogie, BillyBop

"If you're on to the newest trends in music country you must certainly knock at the door of Amy Speace. Those looking for honest and personal work have come to the right address." - Keys & Chords

"There's more than nerve and creativity noticeable on the meanwhile fourth album of this singer - songwriter, already the title track "the Killer In Me" and "This Love" feature vintage Lucinda Williams." - Rootsville.be

"Speace knows how to make a beautifully varied CD that builds a coherent unit through a wonderful balance of pop, rock and blues, ballads and up-tempo numbers that never bore you for a minute. A truly excellent and grown-up album." - MOORS MAGAZINE

Indie Extreme To Debut Independent Artist Showcase During Red Gorilla Music Fest 2009

Hit songwriters, Matt Brouwer and Evangeline, to Headline Showcase

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 2009) - The independent label management firm Indie Extreme will spotlight 4 of their independent acts during its first annual Independent Artist Showcase on the rooftop of the Blind Pig Pub on 6th Street in Austin, TX from 4 p.m. - 8pm on March 19 (Thursday).

The event which is sponsored by Stage Sponsor Initial Underwriting Group, and Silver Sponsors Music Arsenal and Project: AK- 47, which is an official part of the RedGorilla Music Fest, will feature a performance at 6 p.m. by hit singer-songwriter Matt Brouwer and at 7 p.m. by hit songwriting team, Evangeline. This will be the first appearance of these 2 artists at the premier Austin showcases during the largest gathering of music fans and industry executives in the country.

Brouwer will be performing songs from his newest album, currently in digital release, Where's Our Revolution produced by Grammy winning producer, Michael Omartian. The album has already garnered international award nominations, airplay and is currently gaining ground at college radio stations throughout the USA.

Evangeline, whose first single "Rain" from their debut album, We're Alright Down Here, rose to #129 on the Top40 MediaBase Chart in early 2008 and #9 on the Indie Top40 MediaBase Chart, will be showcasing some of their yet unrecorded songs along with the tunes from their album.

Other acts taking the stage for 20-minute sets will be Nashville- based R&B Fusion singer-songwriter Traci Root (5:30 p.m.), and California native Christian singer-songwriter Quimi (5:00 p.m.). Admission to the event is free.

"Each of our prior Indie Extreme Independent Artist Showcases at other industry events have been a huge success, so when we were offered this opportunity by RedGorilla to host a Day Party we felt it was time to expand into Austin," said company CEO Kathy Douglas, who founded the Nashville-based company in 2006. "Matt Brouwer plans to perform several selections from his limited release album. He will be joined by several of our other highly acclaimed acts that perform in a variety of musical styles. There's no doubt it will be a highlight of the RedGorilla Music Fest."

Indie Extreme moved its national headquarters from Houston to Nashville in mid- 2007. The fast-growing international firm supports independent artists and record labels by providing administrative and managerial services such as distribution, correspondence, bookkeeping, CD/merchandise fulfillment, marketing, database development, web site development, management/maintenance, e-commerce management, and the coordination of vendor services.

Douglas added that Indie Extreme is staging the Independent Artist Showcase with the RedGorilla Music Fest to help build exposure for professional and emerging independent acts.

Performing at the March 19 event will be

* Former Sony/BMG sub-label recording artist and hit singer-songwriter Matt Brouwer www.mattbro.com. The Canadian singer-songwriter has landed hits on the Billboard chart (I Shall Believe) and the New Music Weekly Hot 100, AC, Indie AC, and Top 40 charts (Surrender). His other CDs, Unlearning, B-sides Recording Vol. 1, and A Merry Little Christmas, follow his award-winning and critically acclaimed debut CD, Imagerical. Brouwer's newest album Where's Our Revolution, produced by multi -Grammy winning producer, Michael Omartian and features background vocal performances by legendary artists Amy Grant and Vince Gill.

* Evangeline www.evangelinegroup.com, a four-member band from Houston, TX led by songwriters-storytellers Jeffery Armstreet and Jonathan Barrick. The act uses its soulful pop, rock and folk-accented music to communicate the depths of life's struggles and challenges in relationships, choices, death, life and faith. Acclaimed producer and EMI recording artist Robbie Seay produced the act's first album, We're Alright Down Here, which gained national attention when it's first single (Rain) landed at #129 on the Top40 Billboard chart and #9 on the Indie Top40 Billboard chart. The song was also featured on a VH1 Radio interview segment with Evangeline and on Continental Airlines InFlight magazine playlist.

* Traci Root www.traciroot.com, a Nashville-based singer-songwriter whose performances in Southeast Asia have drawn up to 40,000 people. The artist has received critical acclaim for a style that combines classic R&B with modern soul, jazz and hip-hop. This two-time ASCAPlus award-winning songwriter made it to Round 2 of American Idol's auditions in New Jersey, (that would put her in the top 1% of the 10,000 hopefuls and/or skeptics who showed up to audition), she was picked out of the crowd by Fox News to sing a Stevie Wonder tribute live to New Jersey, New York and Washington DC. She was also a 2007 Independent Music World Series Northeast Semi-finalist.In December of 2008.

* Quimi www.myspace.com/quimimusic, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter who "pours out her heart and soul" through rocking vocals and an acoustic guitar to show her love for Jesus Christ. The soft-spoken yet enthusiastic artist recently stepped onto the music scene with her self-titled debut CD. A former nationally ranked tennis player, Quimi has been writing songs for five years. Her 10-song CD, which was produced by The Katinas, features charismatic vocals and funk, jazz and reggae-accented songs.

"Today, it's harder than ever for artists to land major record deals or for smaller labels to receive substantial radio airplay and record sales," Douglas noted. "Indie Extreme levels the playing field by providing all of the administrative and managerial resources they need. We are working to build a 2,500-member network around the globe."

Amy Speace Invited To NERFA And Folk Alliance Conferences

Grassy Hill Entertainment singer-songwriter Amy Speace has been invited to showcase the upcoming 2008 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference (NERFA) as well as February's International Folk Alliance Conference.

Amy will be performing her NERFA showcase on Friday November 14, 2008 (11:05 - 11:20 PM) in the Dutchess Room at the Hudson Valley Resort in Kerhonkson, NY. Amy also showcased last year's NERFA conference on November 9, 2007 at Kutsher's Resort and Conference Center in Monticello, New York.

Amy was also invited to an official Performance Alley Showcase, during the International Folk Alliance Conference being held on February 18-22, 2009 in Memphis, Tennessee. Further details will be announced on Amy site ( www.amyspeace.com ) as they become available.

"Let's get the comparisons out of the way. Yes, there is a vocal resemblance to Rosanne Cash, but as a songwriter Amy Speace is non-pareil. Delving into the heartbreak and melancholy of country music with a folk/rock sensibility and a class and reserve reflective of the best of Alison Krauss, Amy Speace has created an album full of classic tunes that cannot be ignored or denied. Rating: 5 Stars (Out of 5)" Wildy's World

Amy Speace has already won a loyal grass-roots fan base, thanks in large part to live performances that merge warmth, humor and emotional immediacy, and to a tireless touring schedule that's already taken her across the United States. She's also won considerable critical acclaim, with The Village Voice observing that Speace is "taking her Americana away from twangy contemplation toward tangy confrontation" and noting that she's "not another of those breathy would-be child poets, but a real singing writer of songs." Time Out New York stated, "Amy Speace plays sweet, twangy folk music with a clear voice and an innocent vulnerability," while The Nashville Scene noted that she "balances wry humor with open-hearted honesty." And renowned Nashville critic Robert K. Oermann, writing in Music Row, dubbed her a "new star."
