Gathering Time Sweeps March Folk Radio Chart

Gathering Time, a Long Island, New York-based folk-rock harmony trio, had both the #1 album (Keepsake) and the most-played song ("Who Knows Where the Time Goes") on folk radio in March, according to charts compiled from radio playlists submitted to the Folk DJ Listserv (FOLKDJ-L), an electronic discussion group for DJs and others interested in acoustic-based music on the radio. Gathering Time also had six of the 25 most-played songs, which made them the most-played artist on the chart. More than 140 DJs from throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia submitted playlists in March. The trio plans to use its Folk-radio success as a springboard to an Americana radio release in late May.

Each song on Keepsake, Gathering Time's fourth full-length CD (officially released on March 1), documents a common experience by focusing in on something tangible that represents a memory. Band member Hillary Foxsong, who conceptualized the album and curated its production, explained the idea behind it: "A Silver Star, a mom's guitar, a battle scar, a lover's letter from long ago. All are physical things imbued with greater meaning by the memories attached and the significance of what they symbolize. Each is a Keepsake."

The collection contains 14 songs, including nine by the trio's members (Foxsong, Stuart Markus and Gerry McKeveny), one song each by Long Island songwriter Martha Trachtenberg and Catskills-based songwriter Stuart Kabak, two covers of 1970s classics (including "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by the late English folk-rock singer-songwriter Sandy Denny), and an interpretation of a traditional Irish/Welsh folk ballad. Keepsake builds on the strength of the trio's previous release, When One Door Closes…, which was #3 on the international Folk-DJ chart for January 2014.

Blending many streams of folk-rock and Americana, the CD entwines multiple folk music traditions, including Irish and Appalachian folk, British-style blues, roots country, 1960s folk-rock and modern singer-songwriter. A hallmark of Keepsake is the three-part harmony for which Gathering Time has made its name on the northeast folk circuit and beyond.

The trio has drawn the attention of folk fans with a sound reminiscent of musical luminaries of the 1960s such as The Byrds, Peter, Paul & Mary, Joni Mitchell, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. However, Gathering Time's head-turning harmonies and instrumental acumen broaden its appeal to a wider audience that includes many who never considered themselves fans of folk music.

More information may be found online at www.gathering-time.com, while videos -- including one of a recent concert performance in Glen Cove -- may be viewed on the trio's website and at www.youtube.com/gatheringtimetrio.

Lou Ruiz To Perform With TV Star Piper Curda At 'Tween Stars Live' Events in Canada in May

Singer-songwriter Lou Ruiz announced he will be performing live with TV star & singer Piper Curda at two upcoming "Tween Stars Live" Events in Canada May 2nd and 3rd. Piper is best known as "Jasmine" on the Disney Channel TV sitcom "I Didn't Do It". Lou will accompany Piper with acoustic guitar and vocals for her performances in Montreal May 2nd and in Ottawa May 3rd.

The young Houston based singer-songwriter has a sound compared to the style of popular Americana singer-songwriters like Ed Sheeran & John Mayer. Lou Ruiz delivers a unique soulful folk-rock experience. Lou collaborated with Grammy nominated producer Billy Smiley (Johnny Cash, Bebe and Cece Winans) on his latest EP, "The Screen Door". Lou has a beautiful, soulful voice that resonates the heartfelt emotions of his beautiful, self-penned original songs on "The Screen Door". From the edgy strong licks of "Nowhere Train" to the ethereal "Meet Me Here", Lou's Americana songs offer many incredible journeys and musical experiences.

The 25-year old Texas native who studied songwriting and voice at the prestigious Songwriting School of Los Angeles under the tutelage of Rob Seals and had the privilege of learning from hit writers like John Keller (songwriter for Rickie Lee Jones, Aaron Neville, Al Green, Etta James, and Wynonna), Phil Cody (songwriter with Neil Sedaka, Huey Lewis), and Ryan Toby (songwriter for Usher, Will Smith) is excited to be performing again live with the talented Piper Curda.

"I love getting to sing with Piper," says Lou Ruiz. "I'm still trying to find something she's not good at. We usually sing in front of a camera for YouTube, so getting to play in front of an audience together is a real treat. I'm excited to be playing another 'Tween Stars Live' event with her. The last one we did was so much fun!"

After the Canadian shows, Lou will return to the U.S. and kick off a 9-week summer concert tour of Young Life Camps in North Carolina and Colorado performing live for thousands of high school teens at the popular private lifestyle retreats.

Fans can visit www.LouRuizMusic.com for more details and his latest news and tour information.

Lou Ruiz's "The Screen Door" EP is currently available for purchase on iTunes.

Tasty Musical Stew

Website: http://www.tonivere.com/

Enter Hashmagandy, the folk-rock all-star gurrll band with Toni Vere on rhythm guitar, harmonica and vocals; Carla Rawlyck on lead guitar and vocals; Kelly Temleck on bass and vocals; and Lauren Buckell on drums.

Toni Vere and Hashmagandy are in the works to release Vere's debut album, Just To Be, by the end of January 2010. The CD was recorded and produced at Alchemy Studios in Calgary by Toni Vere and Jeff Muller, and Vere and her band are busting at the seams.

"My ultimate message is basically the same as the title to my CD: Just To Be… What I've struggled towards for most of my life has simply been to find out who I am and to honour that. I find that joyous place within my heart and soul just by being on stage playing music and connecting my thoughts and ideas through song with the people who I'm lucky enough to be performing to," says an overwhelmed Vere, who has spent more than twenty years writing, performing and touring western Canada, but has never taken on such a major recording project before.

Vere has a gift for songwriting and performance, and has combined her passion for writing words into music with the songwriting capabilities of her seasoned fellow band members.

Vere's sound can best be described as folk-rock, with roots, blues and country elements that walk in between the riffs of her original music to create a gritty, hearty, honky-tonkin' groove. Her songs tell honest life stories that most anyone can relate to, infused with an on-stage vivacity that makes audience members sing along and tap their feet.

Vere is filled with gratitude for her rapidly growing fan base and support network, who have helped her recently become ReverbNation's number one Calgary folk artist. She also gives special thanks to the collaboration of all musicians on Just To Be, as well as Lin Elder, Kate Reid, Hashmagandy and her partner, Marilyn – who takes care of the business end of Vere's musical career.

While looking forward to the CD release, she is ultimately excited about the journey on which she and her band are embarking.

"Hashmagandy is a new chapter in my life. Carla, Kelly and Lauren are more than band mates; they've become my friends, and sharing a stage with them is the ultimate musical high."
